Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

I tried one of these famous bridge pickups many years ago in one of my Strats, and I really didn't go for it only because the pickup seemed to have a buzzy sound to it. But yet this particular pickup has such a famous reputation I decided to order one for my Les Paul. I'm the kind of guy who is willing to try something again even if my initial experience with something wasn't very good.

For those of you who have used this bridge pickup please tell me what your experiences with it were. Good or Bad.

I'd say your initial impression is accurate; most DiMarzios I've played have that sort of metallic high end going on. It's a great pickup if you happen to like that sound, but I can't say I like it enough to want one.

I love them. Put a PAF 36th in the neck with it and your Les Paul will be complete.

Really great pickup. Great variety of tones. I play almost everything with it. I have it paired with a paf pro

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

It's one of my go to's. I have it in two guitars. It's hot, but not so hot that I can't get it to clean up well with the volume knob. I believe there's a reason it's considered a classic.

It's paired with a PAF Pro in one guitar and another Super Distortion in the other. Both guitars are mahogany, one's a LP the other is a custom build of my own.

Try it. In a Les Paul they work well. In a Strat I wouldn't like it either.
If it still sounds too bright or shrill for your taste in the Gibson try the Super 3 as well. Very similar output but with tighter lows and less highs.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

I have it in the bridge of a les paul copy. It sounds chewy lol

I like it, has a big sound but I don't like it very close to the strings, starts sounding buzzy sorta, so I have it 3mm away, sound nicer that way.

It sounds very close to this in a LP

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

Adjusting the height of the pickup to where you like it is important. I've always had a Super D guitar somewhere, and it's perfect in a Les Paul for the sounds that I like. It splits nice as well, giving me a tone I can't get with most other pickups. I've heard them sound fantastic in a Strat but I've never done it myself. I had it in a basswood strat copy (The Jesuscaster), but it did sound buzzy and not Super Distortion-like at all no matter how I adjusted it. It must work though if Dave Murray from Iron Maiden made it famous!

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

Dave and Adrian Smith both used them in strats. I have an Adrian Smith Jackson with a Super D in it and it sounds great.Actually, thinking about it, I have Super Ds in a Jackson King V and Korean Hamer Sunburst!
I like the Super D a lot.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

It is a very thick sound, could be called lo-fi compared to the latest, but it really pushes bright Marshalls beautifully. Dave and Adrian will confirm this. :D

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

Love it.

Thick, hot, highs cut through, nothing but love. My OTHER favorite high output distortion bucker

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion: Your Impressions?

It works in everything with the exception of basswood or if your guitar is naturally lacking in mids. In that case other pickups are better.

I have one in both a Gibson V and a Kramer superstrat. Love it in both!
