Dimarzio Super Distortions

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Sweet. I pulled the trigger on it a few hours ago and it should be here in a few days. I gotta say, I've never even really paid that much attention to Dimarzio, but from what you guys are saying so far, I'm starting to get pretty excited about it.

Good stuff, guys. Thanks for the input. :beerchug:

Now, just to decide what guitar it goes in. :scratchch

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

IMO, it would be worth wiring up the SD via a series/parallel mode switch. Paul Gilbert is reputed to have used the parallel option rather a lot. (Don't let that put you off.)

On the Westone Thunder, you will be spoiled for choice with locations in which to install the mode switch. :D

Haha. Yeah, as soon as I read your first sentence I was like, "****, man, got that covered...". :D

The dude I got it from said that he'd had to lengthen the leads at some point, so I'm not sure if he's lengthened all four (at the time I wasn't even sure if it came with four-con wiring) or if he's just taped off two of them and given it a hot and ground wire. It's not like it's a big deal to undo that and lengthen all four wires anyway.

I'm thinking the middle mini-switch would be a good place for it. Normally, that knocks one pickup out of phase with the other but I pretty much never use both pups at the same time and even more rarely with them out of phase, so that switch is getting very little use.

We shall see, though. To be honest, I'm not even sure which guitar to put it in yet. :friday:

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

The only Dimarzio I've ever bought more than once. Like someone said, it's a standard. If you like crunch and you want a pickup that will sound good in just about anything, the Super Distortion will do it. I love Duncans, but it seems to me that they can be a bit tempermental about the guitar they are in--except the Brobucker in my case. The Super Distortion sounds great in every guitar I've ever put it in. It is a crazy good sounding pickup.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

I almost want another Super D in my LP.....if I weren't so hell-bent about finding out why the Brobucker kicks so much arse.

You'll have fun with it. I was never into the Super-D much, but DM has a few models that I like a lot. What you may find is that there is a distinct DiMarzio flavor to just about all of their pups...it is distinctly different from SD.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Was Steve about to offer up some internet lore and unfounded third party knowledge and opinion?

:p

Because, ya know, I'm actually cool with that stuff. I've never even used a Dimarzio before, never mind this particular one. Consider me a blank slate on this topic.

Internet lore that I was about to offer up:

I've read that the Tone Zone and Super Distortion are pretty similar pickups. I really like the TZ, so figure you can't go wrong with the SD.

I have one of each, and will say that they are similar, but not that similar.

My feelings: Super D has more highs, is more open, less compressed. ToneZone is a little more Metal to me. SuperD is a little more all around.

I like them both.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

So they have the original super distortion... they also have the dual sound which is a 4 conductor super distortion... but they also offer a super distortion under the super distortion name with 4 conductor. I dont get it.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for, really. I mean, I love Duncans but they're all I've ever used. I really want to see how much fun the other kids are having on the other side of the fence, ya know? So that distinct flavour, as you put it, is really what I'd like to find, I think.

Plus, it was a decent price on a classic pup that I'd have to try someday....

The Dul Sound comes with a switch or a push Pull pot. Other than that the SD and the DS are the same thing.

The Dual Sound was simply a Super Distortion with three (later, four) output conductor + shield cabling rather than single con + braided shield cable. Eventually, both models were offered with four con + shield cable.

Nice enough to throw some pot into the deal eh? Maybe dimarzio ain't all that bad.

:joke:

In seriousness though, that is pretty nice and convenient.

I have had both and the TZ has dual resonance coils and is pretty hot and dark, the super d is very crunchy and has more sizzle due to its ceramic magnet. of those two i prefer the super d. it's a classic for many, hell al dimeola even used one for years!

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Once I find my Trad Pro's stock electronics, I'm probably tossing an old double cream X2N and square ear Super D in there. I can't wait to get home and start digging.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

The DiMarzio, Super Distortion is my favorite high output pickup. My favorite application for Super D is in the neck position of a Telecaster!

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

As stated already, it's a classic for a reason. One of my favorite pickups. Try it in parallel mode. It sounds fantastic. I've used it that way in the bridge but never in the neck. Wondering actually how a SuperD combo would sound with the bridge in series and the neck in parallel. That could be a *****in' setup.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

When I was looking for a replacement for the Gibson 500T, I checked every sound clip on the SD site and the Dimarzio site. The one pickup that really sounded good to me in all the clips was the Super D.

I got it, had it installed and loved it. It's great with some crunch, stands up well with Dual Recto type gain and even sounds good clean. It's very round but cuts through.

I like it a ton aside from the JB8, my favorite replacement pup.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

had one in two different Strats when i was in high school

P E R F E C T pickup for a raw rock sound...very 70's.

i switched it to a CustomCustom in the strat i kept and liked it better because it was a little cooler, had tighter lows and a more natural-sounding crunch but i wouldn't turn down a Super D for a good price if i was building a project guitar.

as an aside: My Les Paul Custom had Duncan Antiquities in it when I bought it...popped the cover off the bridge pickup so i could raise it closer to the strings and, lo and behold, my bridge Ant has double-cream bobbins and looks AWESOME.

However, I still sometimes find the bridge lacking in lowend and output...and a double-cream Super Distortion has been on my mind as a replacement...
