Dimarzio Uses Alnico 4 Magnet in a Humbucker!

Re: Dimarzio Uses Alnico 4 Magnet in a Humbucker!

Low output, a4, paf type?

I am very interested.

I find it weird they are using an A4 in the bridge, and an A5 in the neck. I know I shouldnt make judgement without hearing it, but that seems backwards to me.

I have a Jazz neck with A5 and burstbucker bridge with A4 and the combo is wonderful.
The A5 seems to help keep the neck clear and sweet. The A4 helps add body and texture without being bright and hard like A5 or soft and round like A2.
it depends on the pickups though. I wouldn't stick with A5/A4 if I had set of '59s.

Sounds yummy. I am so glad that there is a standard production (i.e. affordable) A4 humbucker on the market now...especially considering that 70 percent of PAF humbuckers had A4's...

Yep, that is exactly why I shouldnt judge the pickups before playing them. It has been my experience that PAF style pickups do better with an A4 in the neck though so my comment was more geared towards using the A5 in the neck.

I find the marketing of this pickup interesting, by calling it the "PAF Master" they are clearly trying to catch the attention of the large group of players looking for a genuine PAF sound, but they are marketing them with Paul Gilbert which should appeal to the shredder crowd.

Both p'ups are different. The neck is using the "Air" technology, the bridge isn't. They even cite the patents of the technologies used in each p'up.

The neck p'up looks a whole lot like a re-packaging of the 36th Ann, if you ask me.

The Gilbert video is NOT a good representation of the neck p'up, due to the physical location on the guitar used.

Taking an un-educated guess (I haven't actually even physically seen these p'ups), I think if you EQ for the bridge, the neck will be a bit muddy.

I don't know WHY they didn't make the neck just like the bridge, using the same technology and the same magnet? Too high the production cost? Only Steve Blucher would know, I guess...

HTH,

Good. A4 magnets and PAF-style coil winds go together extremely well.

I'd like to see these as an A4 pair with phase reversal à la Peter Green.

Not really, considering how bright and scooped A5's are.

Pretty cool. The neck pu in particular sounds great - fat but still clear.

Love that PGM800 too ;).

Makes me wonder why nobody I know makes 23 fret guitars

Re: Dimarzio Uses Alnico 4 Magnet in a Humbucker!

Sounded like he was channeling Buck Dharma for a few of those licks.

His music doesn't quite do it for me, but Gilbert is such a kick to watch. Awesome video.

Anyone else think this might be a good set for an SG?
