Re: dimarzio vs duncan

This poll is just goddam stupid, a no brainer. Asking Duncan-Dimarzio forum in a SD forum? Of course SD wins.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Both are equally great in their own respects and give different results. It is great to have both to chose from IMHO!
Like duncan does not have anything like a tone zone or liquifire and dimarzio has nothing as great as a SH5 custom or JB.
so if i needed a bridge pup that would give me the thickest single notes that have amazing burn when playing on the B and high E the TZ is a no brainer.. just as if i wanted a singing lead tone with amazing harmonics that was extremely versitile the JB wins hands down.:cool2:

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Both are great in certain applications.

However, there are things I need Duncan just doesn't cover, and I could be perfectly happy using strictly DiMarzio as they hit all the tonal points I need, even though there are Duncans I prefer in certain guitars. So if it's a "you can only have one" thing, I have to go with DiMarzio.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Big time SD fan, except for the Duckbuckers.
I have tried all of the SD single ‘Strat’ pups and most of the SD humbucker pups.

Used DMZ and now those DMZ pups sit in a tool box in my garage.
Tried all of the single ‘Strat’ style DMZ pups, but none of the humbuckers.

Never got the soul out of the DMZ’s.

Also tried brands of pickups… EMG, Bill Laurence ‘Wilde Keystones’ Bareknuckles, Fender, Gibson, Lace Sensor, DonMare (Very good pups), Lindy Fralin (Very good pups), D Allen (Very touch sensitive pups), Lollar, Suhr, Barden (Excellent pups), and Rio Grande.

But alway seem to go back to Seymour Duncan pups, because I can get more soul and grit (When wanted) that I want from SD’s that any of the rest that I tried.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I definitely think Duncan has the advantage with the vintage crowd and those that like older designs. I personally don't like symmetrically wound pickups anymore... to me, kind of boring and 1 dimensional. The home-made Custom/59 hybrid (regardless of magnet) is definitely the best Duncan I've used.

That said, my Air Zone ain't going anywhere, anytime soon from my guitar. The feel, the dynamic response, the harmonics are just killer.

Very different philosophies and both are great. Load up a guitar with any Duncan or Dimarzio, put a great player behind it and you'll get tone wood. To me, amps are really the key to great guitar tone. You can't lose with either brand, IMHO.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I just never got along with dimarzio. I have only tried 4 or 5 but that shows me that I dont have good odds in liking them. That said I think they are good pickups but they are different. That different just isn't what I am going for. O do want to try a super distortion however.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I like and use both, but Duncans seem to match my technique, guitars, amps a little better overall. DiMarzios tended to be bassier and although they were excellent for the higher gain stuff, I like the overdriven and clean sounds that I get with Duncans better.

Seems a lot of people argue that Duncans are more for the vintage crowd and DiMarzios for the modern/progressive. There's some great classic rock tones to be had with a Super Distortion as well as modern tones with a Screamin' Demon and a high gain amp.
For really vintage, Duncan does seem to have the upperhand though with stuff like the Antiquities and such. Have to try those Seth Lovers out one day.
