Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Which would be a more versatile 7 string set, Dimarzio Crunch lab/LiquiFire or Seymour Duncan Nazgul/Sentient. I want something that has a nice distortion tone but also cleans up very well, I know both these sets do fit this criteria but I was wondering which was better. I currently have a SD Distortion 7 in the bridge and a Warman Deadly Sinner 7 (which I do not recommend) in the neck and I need a new neck pickup because the warman kinda sucks, super bassy and muddy for a neck but I was thinking why not a whole new set unless someone can recommend a good neck pickup that goes well with a Distortion 7 and cleans up well.

Re: Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

One of my all time favorite neck pickups is the DMZ Liquifire–awesome cleans and takes crunch very nicely. I personally felt the Crunch Lab was one dimensional–cleans were really bad, IMO. I've paired the Liquifire up with the SD Screamin Demon and love the combo.

I have not tried the SD Nazgul nor Sentient set so I will leave those suggestions to others. :)

Best of luck!

If you're happy with the Distortion in the bridge, Get a 59 or Jazz for the neck. What type of guitar is this for?

Re: Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Is the 7-string version of the '59 not bassy like the 6-string version?

Between the Jazz and the Sentient would largely depend on how bright you want to go.

Re: Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Its just a Jackson JS22-7 (Which on a side note I would STRONGLY recommend, absolutely amazing value for money and a very nice guitar)
I think i'm going to stick with the Distortion 7 and just get a neck. Out of the Jazz, Sentient and '59, which would have the 'glassiest' cleans?
As for Pegasus, I'm planning on getting one of those for my 8 string paired with an Ionizer.

Re: Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Don't forget that you can compare the 3 pickups you want on the website, and also check out the YouTube page for sound samples. As far as glassy cleans, that would be the Jazz.

Re: Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

+1 for Jazz: no brainer. Full Shred may be better still, but I don't know the characteristics of that guitar. It has tighter bass and I dare say it performs better under high gain as a result. Cleans are still good, unless you like them big and can't manage to finesse extra bass out of the rest of your signal chain.

FWIW, I've had the 6-string version of the C-Lab which came in a guitar I bought used, and I always thought it was kinda mehh. Cool attack, and tight, but it's got slightly stuffy bloated low-mids and not much bite in the high mids (JMO). I'm more of an old-school grindy metal tone kinda guy, so I replaced it with a JB and I'm happier now.

The amp matters.

FWIW, I like a JB in the right hands as well! :)

I know the amp matters a lot. I recently upgraded to a tube head and Vox 1x12. Both clean and distortion channels sound amazing, it was exactly what I was looking for.

I had quoted a post that annoyed me to no end because a couple of the statements were so glaringly wrong, but his point (the amp matters) was absolutely correct.
