anyone got much experience with it. i am sure it can do old school extreme metal. but what about the modern styles. hos is the lows mids and highs both in level and character. is better suited in a bright or dark guitar. or is it a pup that does well in either

Re: dimarzio x2n for MODERN metal

Thats a really really REALY bright pickup. I'd pass, especially in a Floyd or Alder guitar.
A set neck Mahaogany might be okay.
I'd be more inclined to rock a Full Shred for sure!

Re: dimarzio x2n for MODERN metal

You think the X2N is super bright??? I totally don't agree with that. I think it's a very balanced pup - particulalrly when in full-on mode. Very characteristically DiMarzio. And Hotter Than Hell (<= shameless KISS plug)

I think it could totally do modern metal. And I can't say enough for series/parellel/single wiring. Adds immense flexibility to it.

But - remember. It's going to be compressed like a mofo and with most modern amps the hawtness is wasted. No need with all of the uber gain from amps. In fact, running it into megadrive will probably sound like crap.

But - if pimp slapping some preamp tubes into a horrible clipping tube life shortening hell of input is what you want...it's your pup!

i have played a few guitars with them in it but didnt much care for it. they were in el-cheapo guitars though but i thought not only bright but a real chissley sounding a lot of highs and high mids.

Re: dimarzio x2n for MODERN metal

I have it in a mahogany super strat and it's great. It can definitely do modern metal sounds but don't expect it to completely clean up when you need it to. It is LOUD but really toneful. Very responsive to picking dynamics. I love it for 80's metal all the way to down-tuned technical prog. Highs and lows are really tight and the mids have a very unique "vocal" sound. I might be the only guy on the planet that has split it... And it sounds pretty good! Surprisingly enough it has a bit of twang to it. Like some tele pup from hell.

I've got a couple vids of myself playing it in my sig... Look for the "D & F Mixolydian Sounds" and "Lydian Sounds" vids. Don't mind my "playing". :D

Oh! I don't know if you're familiar with him but, Michael Romeo from Symphony X uses it in his bridge. You can hear a very good example of what it will give you, here @ about 0:56 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54eZyO3cdGg
