DiMaz Air Norton/Air Classic Set Report

So awhile back I had asked Dimarzio (in an email, I dont know if it was Larry, but whoever it was answered me a 5 am in the morning) what pickup set would be good for my Solid Hard Maple Gibson, and was recomended the Air Norton bridge and an Air Classic neck. I also put an HS-3 in the middle of the H-S-S.
Well, sounds pretty good. I havent played it loud yet, but one thing is there is a huge volume mismatch between the bridge Air Norton and the Neck Air Classic.
Strange that DiMarzio would reccoemend such a mismatched set.
Looks Like I'll be slammin' a Super D in that bridge.
The Air Norton sounds awefully good from waht I've heard so far though.

I always thought the air norton in the bridge sounded like fran dresher on the rag hot/*****y/nasally.

I always laugh at what people say about Dimarzio pickups. They're just as good as Seymour Duncan pickups. I happen to get along w Seymours a little more but both just as good. Dimarzios are what you make of them. Some people complain that they sound flat or muddy but like anything else you can't pop em in and expect them to sound like your Seymours.

I like all of the air pickups except for Air Zone. That's nothing more than a very slightly improved Tone Zone which I can't stand! I think your choice of a Super D will be great with an Air Norton in the neck. Good luck and report back with news of that. I want to know what you think.

I have plenty of Dimarzio pickups too. I just never found a place for the Air Norton.

Snowdog, waht axe did you have the air norton in? IM thinking it is a bridge pickup thats probaly best to sound more articualte than the Super D in a very brightwood guitar, yet without being to spikey in the mids or highs. Still, Im finding it to be a bit mushy in the lower register so far, but again, with more treble definition than the SuperD, which is also a famous bright tone wood pickup reccomendation.

IM thinking it is a bridge pickup thats probaly best to sound more articualte than the Super D in a very brightwood guitar, yet without being to spikey in the mids or highs. Still, Im finding it to be a bit mushy in the lower register so far, but again, with more treble definition than the SuperD, which is also a famous bright tone wood pickup reccomendation.

It was in a Fernandes Decade which is a big Alder Jazzmaster shaped guitar. Probably not as bright as a maple strat. To me it had a full toe down wah sound which was a bit too bright for me. It lacked low end definition. Two GFS Bigmouths gave it what it needed. Full, fat, clear, crushing tone that makes Malcom Young weep.

nevermind. I m pretty sure the tech wired the Air Norton up wrong which is why its so low output. Sheesh!

EDIT_Nope my mistake. its working properly. i adjusted the pickupos but still a bad drop off in volume. Im gonna get me a Super D. That'll do it.

I think you said you wanted classic rock.

Air Norton is not only mismatched in volume, its REALLY a neck pickup if there ever was one. Its a GREAT higher output, thick, warm, smooth, balanced NECK pickup. If you want your bridge to smooth out to the point its almost the neck (lol) go Air Norton.

Otherwise, Dimarzio has put out some much better choices now like the new 36th Anniv Bridge model PAF, Air Zone, and VHOTPAF (if you can find them). I am a big fan of the Air Classic.

I have often said the Air Classic reminds me of the middle ground between a Gibson 57 Classic and SD 59
