ok, so here goes:

How did dimebag do that harmonic flick thingy!? ive been trying for hours...

and what about that weird slide he does with his picking hand in the solo for "Walk"?

and is Cowboys From Hell really played in the open position?
its so damn hard...:smack:

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

I haven't seen a Pantera video in years, but I'll try.

Is his picking hand on the fretboard? He's tapping (slowly), if you're talking about the part in the solo I'm thinking of.

I believe so.

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

For easy dime squeals just hit an open harmonic and pull on the wang bar.

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

dime seems to do some sort of slide, its almost at the end of the solo.

the flick thing is so impressive...

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

to the do slide thing in walk, dime slides from the 2nd fret of the G string with left hand down to 14th fret, then lifts it off when he hits 14th fret. while his sliding down, he puts his middle finger of right hand at the 2nd fret g string and slides down once left hand has been lifted off. You have to be fretting the note with your right hand before taking left hand off. Then repeat.

Took me ages to get the hang of, I found it hard to hit that note with my right hand. I hope my explanation makes sense, if you like I have a tab for it somewhere that I can scan and send if you like.

Cheers

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

To me, it's not that Dime's super fast, but that he could make flashy tricks done to excess work like nobody since EVH.

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

the scream thing done in Cemetary gates is actually very easy, just

1) dive the whammy down
2) tap on a harmonic node
and prtactically at the same time
3) raise the bar up real fast.

Hey Astro, shoot me a PM with some specifics, and I'll get on it for ya', I've got all Dimes stuff, vids, Riffer Madness, articles, almost got the head he used on CFH on Ebay today! :D

Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

I cant tell you much about the flick thingy because it just happens naturally with me but I just learned Cowboys from Hell, and let me tell you I thought it was harder than it really was. For the main part of the song (after the intro, repeated throughout) its all about moving your hand as little as possible for quick hammer ons and accuracy. And yes it is played in the open pos. Re: Dimebag techniques!? HELP!?

To flick harmonics like he did, you need a hot bridge pickup, and tons of distortion dialed in. Once you've learned it, you'll be able to do it on anything, but extra gain helps immensely at the beginning.

Anyway, I think the easiest ones to hit at first are on the low E string. Use your index finger on your fretting hand to mute all the other strings (nothing fancy, just let it rest across them), and slap your middle finger against the 5th or 7th fret on the low E. Once you can do those well, slide your hand up and down the neck, trying to hit all the harmonics (nodes) on the low E. Once you get the E down pat, the A and D should come pretty quickly.

The tricky thing about Dime doing that was he ususally used the G & B strings. It's more difficult on plain strings, but not hard. Use the same method I described for the other strings, and you'll have it in no time.

A really easy, but cool sounding trick is to turn on a flanger or phaser dialed in really heavy, and run your hand up and down the neck, randomly flicking different harmonics. A quick-footed wah sounds neat with that, too.
