Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

Hey guys,
I posted about 2 weeks ago that the JB in this guitar ain't working. I have a '74 Les Paul Special 55 that a former owner routed the Bridge Pickup for a full-size Humbucker.
My local 'hippy-dippy' Used Guitar store has a Dimebucker for $55.
I have a JB in there now. It is totally wrong for this ride. This guitar is already mid-heavy on its own. So, the JB is definitely NOT working.

What experience have you guys had with the Dimebucker? I'm particularly interested in Mahogany rides. Would this be a good choice? Seems like it would be since it's modeled on a Lawrence L500XL.
I know it's not a one-to-one correlation, but I do like Nuno's tone. Of course, an N4 is a VERY different ride.

Any thoughts on this?
THANKS!!!

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

I guess it depends on how much output you want in this guitar. Being that it is a mahogany guitar it would probably sound pretty good depending on what pots you are using. Some say the Dimebucker is pretty versatile, but I have not really experienced that myself.

If you want something a little more medium output, I would go with a Custom, Custom 5 or maybe even a Full Shred.

OK - "I like Nuno's tone" and Les Paul special with a Dimebucker are a fail on a couple of levels....unless you meant Dime :lmao:

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

I say go for it, I know the L500xl is pretty damn versitile and the dimebucker is along the same lines, I also think there are some BL L90's for sale in the trading post they may work better and give a more open sound, I've never tried a dimebucker but have used the wilde l500xl and L90's and they are pretty badass, amazing clarity for a hot pickup and beware they will reveal when you play sloppy. I'm in the process of putting an L90 8h and an old L550 rythym in a Gibby Les Paul Futura which has a BB3 bridge and a sidewinder p90 stock I'm confident it will sound great, you can always wire that dimebucker for series, parallel, split to get different tones.

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

It is worth a try. I also have had Wilde L500XL but not Dimebucker. Based on that experience I think the all-mahogany Gibson-scale Special might work great.
I also know you mentioned Nuno because his guitars had an L500XL in them. Never mind Ace.
I think the traits of the pickup and the guitar might compliment each other nicely. And if you hate it you can always resell the Dimebucker for that price.

I think the dimebucker could work out well (without knowing what style of music, or amp/fx you are playing/using).. However, If this were my situation, I would strongly think about a p-rail and triple shot ring, just to have the option of either series/parallel hb or that lovely p90 goodness in the bridge..(and not to mention the rail coil alone as well) just my .02

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

We'd have to have an idea of what kind of music and what you want this guitar to do. I will say that it is rarely a good idea to buy a pickup just because it is available at a low price. Choosing the right pickup is about EQ and power level you need.

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

Oh, I don't know about that, Dave - the first three replacement pickups I ever bought back in the '80s, I bought because they were in a shop near me when I needed a pickup and bevause they were cheap. They were a Gibson patent number humbucker, a JBJ, and a Super Distortion. All three worked out pretty well for me!

Luck of the draw, though! Learning about what you like, and what will work in your guitar is always a better choice, I think.

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

True. Although aftet rotating through a couple dozen pedals and close to a dozen pickups over the past few years I am starting to think I was better off back then when I had to learn to work with what was available to me.
Didn't mean to hijack this thread. Main point: the LP Special seems like it might like the Dimebucker.

Re: Dimebucker in a Les Paul Special. Good Idea?

Nuno used an L500L mostly from what I remember...

I have a Bill/Becky L500L and a shielded L500XL made before Bill passed and both are possibly available cause im not using either.... Holla holla
