One word of nonrelated advice about the XL500 is do NOT buy from Bill Lawrence USA, which is a part of Torres Engineering, IIRC. It's a sh*tty knockoff of the Bill Lawrence pickup.

I wish I could help but, I only have experience with the XL-500. I would like to try out the Dimebucker though. Consider this a bump!!

What bridge pickup did Dimebag Darrell use?
Dime was on a tone quest for a long time before he and Washburn Guitars came to us. He had tried numerous custom wound pickups, but none were giving him the tone he was looking for. At the time Dime and Washburn came to us, Dime was using a custom wound pickup that he called an XXL-500. It was not available to the public. And it was still not giving Dime his tone. That's when Dime and Washburn turned to us. We started with Dime's best-sounding XXL-500 and then made numerous tweaks. We changed the magnet type, the wire gauge, the number of turns, and other factors. Dime tested the pickups on tour, so they got real world "arena" testing. After a few back-and-forth exchanges, we finally nailed his tone. And that's the SH-13 Dimebucker. It's the pickup that Dime used and -- for the first time -- the pickup Dime used is available to the public. It works great in Dime's solid state amps as well as tube amps. For more information about Dime and the Dimebucker, read his interview on this site. Dime did a great job describing the distortion quality of the pickup. We were very priviledged to work with Dime and we mourned his tragic death. R.I.P.

None of that means the Dimebucker is "better" than the XL500. Dime liked the tone more but, that dosent mean that it is better or that most people will think its better in their book. Tone is subjective, there isnt any rules or laws saying which one is better to everybody. I am planning on picking up a dimebucker and comparing it to my XL500. I will be able to tell which one is better for me when I do it.

I owned several late 70's XL-500L pickups and nothing else sounds like them, I wish I had kept them becuase it is like chasing your tail trying to capture a tone in your head.
I've never tried a Dime but I am tempted since I know he liked the originals as well.

If you do....make sure the 500XL is a zebra with crome surrounds!! If you don't like it... you have my word I'll buy it! 65 Dollars...you actually profit. :wink:
Oh by the way.....That would be insane to put The 500XL in the neck and The Dimebucker in the Bridge! Or vice versa....I have heard both work well in the neck anyways.

Dime obviously thought the 500XL was good enough to use for how long...10 years or something until he got paid to put his stamp on the dimebucker. I'm not saying either one is better, just decide from someone who has compared, or even better, from your own comparison.

Yes, obviously, but there are no constants in his gear. Different amp, different guitar, different effects, different production technology & techniques... it's really not a good comparison.wixomwhat said:
