dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

I'm trying to evaluate using the Antiquity Lap Steel in a old lap steel I'm restoring. The "dimensions specs" link on the web page doesn't go anywhere, and my emails to CS haven't ben answered. I was hoping someone might know the string spacing and maybe the physical length of the pickup. Some people are dropping these into Teles, so are they the same size as a reg Tele or Strat pickup? If there is a web page with specs, just direct me there and I can look it up. The original PU has a 2.2" string spacing, and is about 3" long.

Thanks guys
Tony

I have no idea about the specific pickup, but the antiquities are usually dead size and shape clones to whatever they are based on.

thanks. SD says they are replacements for the " '50 Fender Lap Steel" which could mean several different steels. I'm trying to find specs on those Fender pickups. A lot of Fender steel players just install Strat PUs in those old steels. The original bridge in this Oahu I'm restoring has the same spacing as vintage Strat bridges. I think I'll go ahead and buy it and see how it fits. There's some room to fudge, I can probably make it work, and if it's a _really_ bad fit, I'll use it in another project.

Thanks for the reply

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

Thank you, that's really helpful. The cover plate opening is 3" x 1", so now I know it will physically fit. The Lollar Chicago Steel has approx. the same LxW and it has 2.20 spacing so I bet the SD spacing is similar. I think I'm obsessing over something that isn't that crucial. It'll work.

Thank's for finding those specs, it's a big help.

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

I bought the SD Antiquity lap steel PU, so now I can answer my own question :)
In case others are interested:
The outside string spacing center-to-center is 2.2". It's exactly what i needed. It matches the original Oahu bridge. The other measurements match what Dave posted above.
Thanks

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

Cool! I am happy it worked! Can we also see pics of this in your steel?

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

I haven't had time to install it yet. I'll probably have to wait until the Thanksgiving holiday weekend :-(
I'll post pictures.

Sorry to take so long to follow up. I've installed the Antiquity Lap Steel PU and it sounds great. It has the bite of a telecaster PU, but with more sustain (at least on this Oahu lap steel). I've attached a photo of how it fits under the cover plate. The bottom plate of the PU is the same size as the opening, the PU itself a little smaller. Two things I don't like: 1.) the screw holes for mounting are along the front edge (or rear edge i guess) instead of at the ends. The PU wants to lean to one side; easy fix with some foam rubber 2.) the leads are not soldered well, the ground wire actually came off and had to be resoldered. All in all, I like it. Nice upgrade for this old lap steel.

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

i assume the screw holes are where they are due to the model the antiquity was modeled after, dont know if that was fender or ??, but seymour is fairly particular about these things. it surprises me the leads are poorly soldered. ive had at least a dozen antiquity single coils, though never this model, and the soldering was always well done. was the pup purchased new? glad it sounds good!

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

The Antiquity looks to be modeled after the Fender Champion PU; I've attached a photo I found of an old Fender PU. I think these PUs were attached directly to the wood. The rout on my Oahu is too deep for direct mounting, but I could shim it. It would be interesting to see if it makes a difference in tone.

it was purchased new. I've never had problems with the soldering on other SD PUs; it was an easy fix so I'm not too upset about it.

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

Well despite a few issues, I am happy this worked out. We don't have a lot of steel players here, and always like to welcome more.

Re: dimensions of Antiquity Lap Steel

if you read the steel guitar forums, steel players tend to go for Lollar, George L, or vintage PUs. I've always liked SDs; they're a quality PU at a good price.
