Direct-mount pickups in wolfgang

I've got a wolfie standard that I'm putting some replacement pickups in (didn't have the originals available).

I put some Dimarzio DP100's in there just to have something in there for the time being, but the neck pickup came out much higher than the bridge pickup.

The wires aren't pushing them up or anything, and they're being screwed directly to the body, which is how I thought they were supposed to be. The neck pickup cavity is shallower than the bridge, but is there a specific mounting plate needed for a pickup to fit into the neck position here? I had to sell all my wolfie's months ago, so I don't have another one to go by, and I'd never messed with the pickups on them either.

I'd like to also get the bridge pickup a little higher, and being screwed to the wood, there's not really anything to allow it to adjust higher, unless I'm missing something.

That said, what am I missing?

Thanks

Foam and longer screws.

Foam and longer screws.

Almost, but that would make the neck even higher though. Not quite what I'm looking for.

Does anyone know if the neck pickup on their wolfie has a completely flat base rather than raised a 1/4" or so like most other pickups (the bracket that screws in, if it was just straight, would probably be perfect).

I can probably figure out a way to mod this if I have to, but if there's something that works for certain that you guys know about to also lower the neck pickup, fill me in!

I believe he meant to make the bridge pickup higher.

Re: Direct-mount pickups in wolfgang

i think the wings on the original Wolfie PU's are shorter then average replacement Dimarzio... I've seen quite a few Wolfgangs on the net that have had the pickup routs modded... since these guitars are meant to fit original equipment only aftermarket parts can be a pain...

i have a Wolfgang neck and body and a few odd pieces... i've been trying to find a bridge and tuners that fit directly without paying a fortune...

Thanks man, that's what I figured. I was pretty sure there was nothing underneath the pickups originally (I remember reading somewhere that Ed didn't want anything placed under the pickups).

That's what I was wondering. I'll try to just mod it or see if I can find a replacement base for it.

Got it, and got it! Thanks.

I believe, from what I understand, that no foam was originally used (nor was anything) underneath these pickups, and that added insulation may indeed reduce the contact/vibration/sustain otherwise meant to be there. That said, it may be nominal, I am just trying to do this the way they *originally* were done, with the exception of putting duncan pickups in there.

I contacted the custom shop today, just to see if it's possible to have them make a pair of the mounting plates to attach to the pickups (narrower depth for the neck, and wider depth for the bridge).

Thanks all.

Re: Direct-mount pickups in wolfgang

They (DMZ) should be able to sell you the Wolfgang base plates.

...as long as there isn't some weird trademark issue where they'd be plagiarizing themselves.

Seriously, it sounds like a simple issue of a different baseplate. It should be a simple fix. Good luck! You don't know how bad I wanted a Wolfie for the first couple of years they were out.
