Direct replacements for DD FG-101?

Hello all.

I recently acquired a Schecter Ultra III, which is really nice guitar with bigsby, grovers and roller TOM brigde. Well crafted and good wood. But. I'm pretty disappointed with the Duncan Designed FG-101s. I'm no that familiar with any humbuckers, mini or firebird.

Just loved the sound of STL2 on both of my teles, and i'm hoping there would be some alternative for the bridge pickup for that Schecter. Preferably direct replacement by size (FG-101) with tele-styled sharp, discriminating(?) sound. Any suggestions?

By the way - there is similar thread at The Gear Page with no answers: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1006192

Re: Direct replacements for DD FG-101?

interesting
if you're after dimensions, myself and others here have a few dimarzio soapbar-sized buckers (like a mini-humbucker with a plastic P90-type cover); could measure up and see if they use same-size bobbins? but that's more academic than practical right now
other than that i would investigate which mini-humbuckers will fit those rings, assuming you can handle the full chrome covers.
it's a cool-looking guitar IMO, i like those schecters. you might even want to ask the custom shop for a price on a set of 3 :naughty:
while you're investigating options, taste a few duncans and GFS minis and see what you like

Re: Direct replacements for DD FG-101?

I can't find the size specs for these, which is why i thought i'd ask here.

So the custom shop could basically fit any PU in the same sized housing? If it's so, i'll have to write them.

And yes. I do find that guitar to be really good artifact. Just the PUs could be a lot better. As is, i needed to drop my dyna comp and replace it for the red ranger treble booster, but it still feels too compressed, dull and hollow. FG-101s seem to sound pretty good with fuzzes and distortions, but not for clean..

I find the FG-101s in my Ultra III to be very microphonic at higher gain and volume levels. Very disappointing. I wish Duncan would release a same-sized replacement humbucker that addressed these issues.

Re: Direct replacements for DD FG-101?

I know this is an old thread - I sent an inquiry to SD about this since I have an Ultra VI and would be interested in exploring other options. I'm curious if it's a SD mini-humbucker size route? Has anyone tried to measure or retrofit one? The pickups are not mounted to the pickguard...the pickguard rings do look a lot like the mini HB/firebird style and size, but it either fits or it doesn't - "almost the same" means it's not a fit.

I'm not a big fan of the 3 toggles on these either personally, but that's a personal preference. I may have a custom pickguard made as well at some point - save the existing one and set one up for a 5 way or something. If I were gigging or using it in any band situation at all I think that'd be a requirement. Really well made instruments thought IMO. I don't dislike the pickups so much to find them unusable. The spacing on a bridge pickup is way off though and requires pole piece adjustment for string to string balance I'd say.

I know this is an old thread, but here is some information people have been looking for: DIMENSIONS of the FG-101...

However, I can't find any pickup that fits this size except the now discontinued GFS Wild Dog.
