DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

Been having a blast with the new Dirty Deed distortion pedal!

I have always gotten my distortion from my amp throughout the 80's and 80's. I played Marshalls in the 80's and I switched to Fender in the mid 90's.

Living in apartments and duplexes the past 13 years or so has seriously curtailed my use of non master volume amps for practicing and recording.

So, I switched to Line 6 whenever they came out and started to use that for several years... that experience left me wanting better tone badly!

Then, I started to look into distortion pedals again and called up my friends and borrowed as many different pedals that I could and had fun trying them with my blackface Fenders.

Figured out which designs I was grooving with and decided on a Marshall-In-a-Box from a German pedal manufacturer. Started GASSing for fuzz pedals after talking with Agileguy too.

Then, the Dirty Deed came my way.

The pedal was something "in between" my brown sound pedal and a fuzz... WHAT?!? Is this possible? A Fuzzy distortion that also works as a sweet overdrive? Okay... I'm in.

The pedal to MY ears has: a dirty Vox vibe + vintage Marshall low mid muscle + Big Muff style fuzz

Very unique combination of tones. Yielded instant Sabbath and stoner rock goodness while also being an effective blues fuzz/overdrive.

It's one of those pedals that does a few things quite well and would be welcome on any guitarists pedalboard for vintage distorted and overdriven tones.

A lot of guys feed a decent overdrive with a tiny bit of fuzz for dynamic sweetness... the Dirty Deed can do that all in one enclosure IMHO.

Danny Young does a BLISTERING demo of the pedal and he just kills it.

Danny Young works with Scott Olson and is a remarkably talented guitarist from the UK. Check out his youtube channel and subscribe to his stuff, he has lots of great content!

So, we know about the video I did for the Dirty Deed and if you haven't seen it, check it out here.

JeffB wanted to hear just the pedal + guitar+ amp + room mics and so here is some stuff that didn't make the video and ended up on the cutting room floor.

First is just the guitar in a room. I think I may have one more sample like this and I'll upload it when I get the chance but for now here is the jammin' riff in Black Sabbath and the 1st solo for NIB.

I also cut a song sketch into a decent musical short piece. This is tuned down to dropped B, so we can hear what it sounds like detuned.

. . . nice photo. ^ ^ ^

Sounds like the pedal is worth a try :naughty:

All yore pedals are belongz to uzz. Now I really wanna try this out. But I'll have to take it into the dressing room because I don't want anyone to hear me.

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

Damn, that sounds killer, especially on the NIB solo and Getaway Car. I like those a bit because you can really hear what makes the Dirty Deed unique when compared to other pedals. I think that the clips with full band support sound killer, but it feels like some of the transients get lost in translation. In my experience though, the player will usually be able to feel them and hear them better while playing. That's how I am when it comes to differentiating between similarly voiced pedals.

Anyway, it sounds awesome. I wasn't planning on buying one but I'm definitely going to try it out now.

Will give this a listen tonite Zen, when I can listen on higher quality equipment.....thanks for posting it!

Great playing aside, still not floating my boat..maybe in person, with my own rig I would like it better, but based on the clips I am not digging it at all.

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

I know that no one here cares what I personally have to say based simply on my reply to the first thread last week but i have to say that the clips posted by zenmindbeginner are pretty much what I expected.

The sound of the pedal in the clips is pretty bad in general...it's got a nasty midrange honk in it, the lows are a bit thin and the high seem to be (based on the clips I've heard) either a tad harsh/sharp or muffled...sort of a blanket over the speakers and as soon as you get a nice top end it's too much and rather brittle.

Worst of all to me is the chirp...the over hyped pick attack...that character alone makes it sound like a pedal and only a pedal...no amp ever over hyped the pick attack like that. There are other pedals out there that do it too so it's not an issue unique to this but it is the sure sign IMHO and to my ears of a pedal that wasn't designed very well.

I'd expect it on many low end pedals but from a company that claims to have put in loads of hours into R&D and swears they have learned from their mistakes on their last pedal line I am extremely let down by the tone of this pedal based on the demos.

Zenmindbeginner, this has nothing to do with your demos...garbage in...garbage out. Plain and simple.

I called a few local stores to see if they had any or would be getting any, I want to plug in to one just for myself so I know for sure but not at all to my surprise no one local has any nor do they have any interest in getting them.

The big box stores told me they'd be glad to order me on since they are Duncan dealers but were very clear with me that it would be a special order and would not be able to be returned.

Well, the chirpy pick attack might very well be my playing and the culprit of the objectionable stuff in the tone you are hearing could very well be somewhere in my signal chain.

But the only way to know is by sending you the pedal and I should be able to do that tomorrow. I have planes to catch and a funeral for my Grandfather to go to on Tues/Wed so worst case scenario is that I'll get it out on Thursday.

I'll PM you for your address and we'll get to the bottom of this. : )

I personally like the sound of the pedal but there's no discounting your sophisticated ear.

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

For me, it is difficult to discern how a pedal will sound with my rig. Generally I run clean amps, and get the dirt from a pedal. However, the way I play is generally very different from most demos, so I can only get a seriously rough approximation of what it would sound if I tried it. I play pretty soft, and pick every note..and play a lot with the volume and tone knobs on my guitar.

I don't know that I'd call my ear sophisticated but thanks for the kind words.

As for the chirp I hear it in the other clips that are not you so I have to assume it's not the player, it's the gear. I hear that chirp in a lot of pedals...there are 2 things most pedals just can't get...pick attack and note decay, most pedals out there get it wrong and that is the biggest things I hear that are easy tells that the player is relying on a pedal for dirt.

As for the pedal, PM replied to.

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

This pedal interests me... Big muff fuzz and low mid muscle ? Digable my friend

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

Sorry for the old thread dig up!
Anyways....we got that thing the other day in the store!
Used it on our resident quite difficult and pedal hating Fender Vibro King 20th anni amp....
And it yielded great tones!!! NICE!!!
Then sportingly we tried it on several other amps, from older than myself amps and on to new ones.
Gotta say that I really like that pedal!
And thanks for the demo's here:)
Will take one home one day, and do some recordings as well when I get around it!

Re: DIRTY DEED Distortion Pedal - now featuring NEW content

Guy, take a breather for fcks sake. This isnt a fight to the finish . The pedal sounds damn good at the price point, and sounds great, period .
All any pedal has to have is over exaggerated ' sag', and that will make your "pick attack and note decay", but too much of that stuff and lots of modern players go running for a tighter sound....this may be a wee bit tighter is all-like a Plexi'ish tight, and for many players, that is a blessing and not a curse..
