Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

What's the most convincing reason for a guitar model being discontinued?
a)The model has no satisfactory commercial course.
b)The model has been technologically overcomed.
c)The model emerged to be non profitable(wrong cost/retail price ratio).
d)Negative players/owners feedback.
e)Just because.
f)Something else.

P.S.I'm very interested to the #1 reason!

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

A little bit of A, B, and F I think. Sometimes models don't catch on, sometimes they're just outdated, and a lot of the time (with higher end guitars) they're designed to be a limited run. I'm thinking Gibson with that last one. You know how Gibson loves their limited edition guitars...

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

They must suck, right? Has been true since 1961.

Les Pauls must be replaced with SGs.

A and C are pretty much the same, and are the reason most guitars are discontinued, it seems.

It certainly is not B.

A and
c
look like the top two to me. Marketing director: If we make an Avril Lavigne signature model, we should sell millions of them cuz she's the hottest think out there right now. Guitar buying public: Meh

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

I think the big companies continually tweak their models to a) have consumers think they are getting something special ('limited editions' etc) and b) to eliminate future collectibility that would compete with what they are making at that time.... can you imagine how hard it will be to value all of these models and variations in the future ? Every Les Paul made in 1959 and 1960 is a collectors item. Which current LP will be a collectors item, and how will future generations be able to value them ?

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

I have 2 Ibanez which are discontinued models. It makes me feel I have something special.

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

New ownership of a company is another reason. That is what got the fantastic Washburn HM line. Washburn is also going to regret dropping these guitars in the end BIG time but---.
If some one wants a DEAL on a killer on a WM -24 in Black or White these just popped up on ebay last night. This might be the last round of these we see as new close outs.

F: Schecter has some that they only did for a year. Al-la their aviation guitars

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

Gonna have to go with A+C which IMO are kinda overlapping.
Ascension also presented a valid point although not AS common.

Mixed feeling really, depending on whether I own or wished to get in the future the now discontinued model, whether I like it or regretted it and whether the company released sth new to fill the gap (and again, depending on the feelings I have about the replacement).

Change can be a good things sometimes, others it's just change...

This. But it makes me feel paranoid that I need to scoop them up whenever I see them NOS on eBay.

I have SZ720s, which were made in Korea. Ibanez replaced them in 2008 with the SZR series, made in China, and then phased those out because they sucked. I used to own one, so I can vouch for it. My best guess is that they tried cost cutting measures to boost profits.

Re: Discontinued guitars:How to feel about them?

i almost got ibanez to reissue a discontinued model, that would have rocked. some of you guys even helped me with the mockups, that guitar would have rocked, some of you remember the pictures.

if i recall correctly golden vulture was the bro that helped with the photoshopping.

A and C are not the same to my thinking.
A is refering to the units selling part and C to incorrectly moderate pricing of the model, unlike it's resulting quality.
For example,if an Epiphone comes to sound like a high end LP:You can not approach that price range, you can not risk the reputation of those LP's,so...what do you do with it?
Excessive?Maybe...

You left out because they Suck!

There are a lot of guitar "experiments" that failed. Mostly because of playability. I certainly would not consider my opinion a reason to run a line or shut it down but IMHO it comes down to a few things. They have to play well, they have to hang comfortably on you, they have to sound good, and they have to be easy & relatively inexpensive to maintain or repair.

Probably F or E (just because they are damn good). Take Ibanez Jem (the colorful ones and flower). They are all discontinued despite the tremendously enthusiastic response. They are definitely collectors items nowadays. Maybe Steve Vai/ Ibanez intends to leave a historical mark that will last after they are gone. I don't know.
