Discussion: guitar under $300

Just for discussion, lets say you have $300 (or less) to spend on a guitar. For the purpose of this discussion, new guitars only. What do you buy?

My vote goes for squire tele.

Also: any upgrades don't necessarily have to fit in the budget. ie-pickups, pots, etc.

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

If I could find a shop running a sale on a Squier Classic Vibe Tele, that would be it. If not, a Squire Vintage Modified Tele or a Gretsch Electromatic Special. All of these would likely have their pickups replaced, at the very least.

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

I'd seek out another Anthem WTR-30 (discontinued, but still around)...sickeningly nice for the money. There's not much you can "add" to it to make it any better, just fantastic!

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

Buy used, you get more for you money that way. For $300 you can get a used Epi LP, 335, or SG, which I like much better than any Fender-type guitar.

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

What ever the case try not to buy a cheap guitar with a tremolo. Tremolos almost always suck on cheap guitars your much better of with a hardtail imo.

But like the Blueman said buy used because you get more bang for you buck.

My 800th posts right here.

I would never buy a new $300 guitar. Maybe if I was a newer player but after 25+ years it's just not an option.

I definitely agree with you on that. And almost all of my gear is used for that same reason. But for the purpose of this thread, what would you get new? I'm not looking to buy anything, just thought it would be an interesting discussion.

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

Probably something by Yamaha. You can't really go wrong with their lower end stuff.

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

It'd be really hard to name a brand new guitar that I'd bother to spend just $300 on. If my budget was that low, I'd buy used. However, for sake of discussion, I'll play anyhow.

First, I'd try to find a dealer that still has the Squier CV Duo-Sonic in stock. They usually retailed for $330, but anyone who still has one in stock would probably go down to $300.

If no luck, I'd think about the following:

- Squier VM Mustang; $300
- Squier Cyclone; $200
- Squier VM Jazzmaster; $300
- Squier VM Jazzmaster Special; $300
- Squier VM Jaguar; $300
- Squier VM Jaguar HH; $300
- Squier Jagmaster; $300

For Acoustic - A Simon and Patrick Songmith or Art & Lutherie

For Electric - Epiphone Les Paul

Re: Discussion: guitar under $300

if the "upgrades" aren't part of the budget I'd definitely go with Agile . . . although I have to admit I've never actually played one. That's the awesome power of the interweb; being able to read literally hundreds of reviews. Godin were making some awesome 'bang-for-the-buck' electrics for a while in that price range, and I tried many of those. Not sure if they still do, but for the sake of this discussion I'll put them as my second choice ! !
