Dissecting EVH Wolfgang Bridge pickup

Re: Dissecting EVH Wolfgang Bridge pickup

I wonder what the Wolfgang pickup would sound like with an A2 magnet.

I think it is an A2, Gotta leave for rehearsal in a minute. Will measure it for you later.

GimourD,

Dimensions of the magnet are approximately 2.327" x 0.5" x 0.125."

I am not a metallurgist but, comparing the color and strength of the Wolf's magnet to the Custom Custom's known A2 magnet, I do believe it to be A2 as well.

P.S. In case you were wondering, the screw coil reads 6.85k. Slug coil is 6.78k.

I think I'll put it in my Stratocaster; should blend well with the SSL1's :)

I know that the Peavey Wolfgang pickups were A5. I figured these might have followed that trend.

Will a Trembucker fit that rout if the tabs are rounded off?
A Trembuckers base plate has rounded corners just like the wolfgang PU.

Re: Dissecting EVH Wolfgang Bridge pickup

With apologies for resurrecting a five-year-old thread, I wanted to thank the the original poster for solving a problem that's been bothering me for ages. I successfully carried out this operation a couple of nights ago, and I wouldn't have known where to start without this guide. I've had my EVH Striped for a few years now, and as well as it plays, I never could get on with the hard, sterile sounding import Wolfgang pickup. For all that time, I've had a Custom Custom in my parts box, and I knew it would be the perfect pickup for this guitar if I could only get it to fit. I thought something like this might be possible, but it took chancing upon this thread to prove it was. From start to finish, I'd say the whole operation took ninety minutes, and that's with a lot of pausing to stare at the mess I'd made. I'm going to write a blog post about the exercise in the coming days, going into more detail about the individual steps, and post a YouTube video to illustrate how good the guitar now sounds.

A few photos to add to those already posted:

Well, it is good that the thread produced another successful project! How do you like it?

I like it a lot. To my ears, it's a huge improvement over the stock pickup. It pretty much nails the Fair Warning to 1984 sound. For VH1 to WACF, it's a little too hot, too soft in the highs. I guess that's where the Duncan 78 comes in.

If and when I record a clip for YouTube, I'll post it here.

Here's a video with the pickup in action, along with some info about the process:

Gah! Can't get the video to embed, but the link should at least work.
