Dissident Aggressor

Afternoon all. Different one here, does anyone know how to get the or get near the tone on Dissident Aggressor by Judas Priest? I'm reckoning Gibson, 59's and Marshall. Anyone care to add to that.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

Probably, maybe with the tone turned down pretty damn far.
I personally would be WAY more interested in copping Hell Bent for Leather or Breaking the Law tones.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

The original recording of that song has a beautiful guitar tone.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

I was literally just playing that song last night.

I'd disagree with the idea of turning down tone, though that would depend on rig. For me, "Dissident Aggressor" is a foreshadowing of the tight-and-bright '80s Priest tones.

To my ears, the "Dissident Aggressor" tone is simply that of a Marshall that's been tightened with overdrive. I've been getting in the ballpark with a PRS SE Santana with Gibson 57 pickups, and the EHX Soul Food (Klone overdrive) in front of a Keeley 1962 (Marshall Bluesbreaker variant), with all controls on both pedals literally at noon. If anything, I may want to dial out some low end to tighten the sound even further, but I'm pretty happy with my homemade version of the tone.

I'm not sure what gear KK and Glenn were using at that point.

That tone also has a bit of right hand technique to it - make sure the palm mutes are crisp and precise.

Definitely thinking low output pups, with a Marshall and Overdrive combination. A lot of that is coming from the hands too.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

When I listen I hear a treble boost through a Marshall.

KK:
-Flying V (all he had at one point) or Strat (not sure when he got the strat)
-Dallas Rangemaster (or similiar treble boost...both him and Glenn)
-Marshall (top left input or jumped). The Marshall in the video is a 50w '78 (too late for SAS) but we can assume similar
-Leads the echo unit would push the amp a bit too

Glenn:
-He would have been using a strat or SG at that time

The second video has some text breakdown of what was used on later albums. Too bad not as much detail on each album in the first, but the first video covers 70-80's

Re: Dissident Aggressor

KK also used SG's and Glenn had an Explorer as well.
Basically it's Gibsons and Fender, prob both, prob with stock pickups, thru a Marshall. Also most likely the same gear as Sad Wings, but with studio trickery and better technology. However, all that being said, it shouldn't be too hard to get that tone if you have similar equipment.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

Lots of great advice.

I have a jcm 2000 dsl and a JMP 1 pre amp which will more likely do it. I can recreate a treble boost with an overdrive for surem

Re: Dissident Aggressor

Absolutely that should get you close enough for now. I had a JMP-1 in front of my 9200, (EMG-81), but I was going for the Painkiller tone and I got close enough for my liking.

Re: Dissident Aggressor

I still say there is a fair amount of treble knocked off of the tone. I can get real close to that sound with the tone knob turned way down on a maple neck/mahogany body Gibson (.022 tone cap). THEN boost it. You'll see. The mids are shoved out front, the treble and bass are tapered off. Could be by an overdrive, could be at the amp, could be at the guitar, could be a combination of all of these. But it's not a super-bright sound. (More "chung!" thank "clang!")
