dist. pedal for Saliva style sound

Hello all. For the second time, I caught Saliva in concert and was blown away again. My problem is that my gear is mainly blues or blues/rock based. a tele, strat and a crate vc30. what I'm after is a dist.pedal in the saliva heavy mode because the vc30 doesn't get it by itself. If possible, something fairly inexpensive but not fizzy sounding like some pedals can be. this would be a first time buy in this heavy of a sound for me. thanks.

Link us to some exemplary YouTube clips and I'm sure someone will chime in

I'm happy to help steer you, but there's no way I'm Googling *band name" at work --- seems like it's a bit of a "lob" as far as getting sketchy results

Re: dist. pedal for Saliva style sound

Well first of all to ballpark that sound you're going to need some medium-high output humbuckers. Standard Tele and Strat pickups don't have enough output or the right kind of tone for what you need to do. I'd advise fitting your guitar for humbuckers or look at some hot rails-type pickups.

Second... what kind of distortion is your VC30 capable of on it's own? Depending on the answer you may either want to boost the existing distortion with an overdrive/distortion pedal or run a good-quality high-gain distortion pedal into the clean channel so the pedal does all the work.

Saliva is straight up Gibson Les Paul, 500T, and probably a dual rectifier. When I have a guilty pleasure moment I dial in that sound and riff away with a Duncan Custom. I bet a Line 6 Uber Metal would do it...

They were using Diamond amps when I saw them open for STP a few weeks ago. The used to use Dual Recs when is saw them a few years ago.

Re: dist. pedal for Saliva style sound

the tele has a lil 59 in the bridge which on its best day isn't enough. it used to have a hot rails pup in it but with a vc30 its way tooooo bright. the vc30 is capable on overdrive to get nashville, blues, classic rock and classic metal but really lacks the " balls" of newer metal distortion. the drop tunings don't help. Just looking for a pedal that could be close, without trying to sell the whole rig just to goof around with "Click Click Boom" or Doperide.
I saw them over the weekend in Ohio, they used LP's, Deans and Diamond amps. If the uber metal is close maybe I'll try any other suggestions please post. thanks.

Re: dist. pedal for Saliva style sound

Check out the new Duncan distortion pedals, since this is the year they seem to be specializing in distortion. The Power Grid might be what you're looking for. And +1 to the suggestion of the Duncan Custom. Find a place to put one of those.

I tend to think that the best gain comes from a balance between amp gain and an overdrive pedal, if the amp lacks the kind of gain you want. It's more pleasing to the ear than running a highgain pedal into a clean amp, so if you do get a dist/od, lower it's gain, and run it into an already gainy amp channel.
