Dist Pedal Recommendations

Hope this part of the forum is the right place.

I need help finding a distortion pedal. One for metal in the vain of Dark Tranquility, Killswitch Engage, Arch Enemy and such. Here in Japan we have rental practice studios with amps already in them. Sometimes you are lucky and get a Mesa, Marshall or another tube half stack, other times you get a Roland JC 120 or some other amp that you need to use pedals on.

I'm not looking for a shred style distortion, I am looking for something that is fat and helps with huge rhythms and such. I need a lot of warm, chunky, tight, huge sounding distortion.

I know no pedal reproduces a real tube amp, but I am just telling you the direction I am going in. Thanks for any help.

I like the Boss DS-1 and Digitech Distortion Factory an awful lot.

duncan sfx-03 with a tubescreamer in front of it, best of all worlds. I love mine in front of a clean tube amp, and even with my orange crush 10 it tube warmths up the dist sound a little bit.

+1 on the DS-1. It's simple, cheap, and effective. You may also want to consider something like a Boss ME-50 multi-effects unit. It's versatile, portable, and includes other effects that help you achieve that modern chunk like compression and EQ.
