Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

Hey Everyone,

I just put the sh-6n and sh-6b distortion mayhem set in my 87 Wasburn RS-8v. When I play through my VOX valvetronix 50 watt I hear some raspy humming when playing the guitar. There is no noise when the guitar is just connected, only when played.

I hear it pretty bad if I use anything other than high gain amp models with comp or overdrive effects (because you cant hear much else when playing insane metal.) If I play with chorus/reverb (or most other effects) on any amp model, the fizzle humming is there.

Also, the humming is not homogenous. It varies in intensity but is always present.

Turning the tone all the way down reduces the raspy hum.

Does anyone have suggestions for identifying the problem, know what the problem is, or are these pickups just going to do that no matter what?

Thank You Very Much

Re: Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

did you check all the solder connections and the ground?

Thanks for the quick reply. Really, I dont know how to check to see if they are good. My brother did it for me and he seemed to know what he was doing.

Do I check to see if they have good contact, discoloration, too much exposed wire, or too much solder?

probably all three. of course im not sure thats the problem but if you get noise, you should usually check all the solder points first in case theres a bad connection. maybe someone else will have better advice

oh and welcome to the forum BTW

Thanks for the welcome. I am going to exchange the set as they are not well suited to my guitars construction. It is a PRS copy with a composite neck. I want to get the same setup as Tim Mahoney of 311 (Alcino II in the neck and JB in the bridge.)

Re: Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

I tried the Mayhem set and heard something like what you described.
It's a powerful combo, even with the pup height set low.
I paired the DDs with other pups and everthing is good now.

If you only have one guitar, then a trade is a good idea.

Re: Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

Well, it looks like either the amp may have been the problem, or the pickups did something to the amp. When I travel I use a 15w VOX Valvetronix. At home I have the 100w version. Now, no matter what guitar I play through that 15w, it has a problem. Lots of raspping, like its slightly blown out.

Could those pickups have done damage to the small (and hopefully not my 100w?) 15w amp? If so, what type of damage. I could always replace that little speaker for next to nothing but I know little about the electronics of the head.

Thanks

Chris

Re: Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

Pickups would not damage an amp. You may have had the bass a bit too high and the amp too loud and blown it. Those pups are chunky with good bass but I doubt they did it

Re: Distortion Mayhem set causing hum in AMP

Sounds to me like the 15W developed a failure at an impractical time,. making you think it was the pickups...
