Hey guys I have a Bolt on Jackson RR that I've had for a while and need to swap the stock pups out for something better.I have a Custom/59 and my Eclipse that's tuned to E flat.It sounds
Good but I'm gonna have the Rr tuned to D or drop C.Im afraid the Custom would be to dark and boomy in that tuning.Id like to be able to go between guitars without many eq changes on my amp(6505+)The Distortion/ Jazz and Nazgul / sentient sets seem to sound great without so much lowend.Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Distortion,Nazgul or other?

My main guitar is a Strat with a Distortion and Cool Rails tuned to D. Love it.

Take a look at the Black Winter set, which handles lower tunings really well. It is also more versatile than the name might have you believe.

I'd go with nazgul sentient combo. I can't speak for d or drop c, but I had a distortion bridge/distortion neck combo in a mike mushok prs se baritone (b standard) through a peavey 6505+ combo and it sounded terrible. The bottom end on the distortion at b standard just wasnt tight. Not even with a tube screamer thrown in front of the amp on rhythm (green) channel (tube screamer is meant to tighten up the lower frequencies of the sound). So we can conclude that the sd distortion isnt really made for ultra low tunings. If you read the item descriptions on the nazgul and sentient, you notice that it says that these 2 pickups were originally made just for 7 and 8 string guitars. That means that they were made for the low B string. Which means that they were made for lower tunings.

I'd go with the nazgul/sentient. Why? it covers more of a range of tunings than does the sd distortion. Who knows, you may decide to start experimenting with b standard on your jackson rr (it does sport a 25.5" neck which might have a little string flop at such low tuning but could still do an ok job at handling it).
