There are a few distortion and overdrive pedals that you always hear about, Ts-9, Boss Od1 and Ds-1, Bigg Muff etc, But a few tht I do'n't hear so much about and would like some info in is....
those are pedals that a lot of guitar centers have in all the time and even some mom and pop stores. the best thing i can tell you to do is to play them. they both have distinct sounds and go about distortion in different ways. uuummm people i know that played with a rat ummmm jeff beck, but i can't remember a good song for you to listen too that he played a rat. Randy Rhoads used a distortion + but he had his amps cranked too. i still think the best thing to do is track one down and play it.

early ZZ Top and most Jeff Beck from the middle 70's until his last 3 albums have a Rat on them, not to mention eearly Joe Perry, Joe Walsh, as well as Buzz from the Melvins and almost ALL of the Foo Fighters records have a Rat all over them...it is my favorite all around distortion pedal, and of all the dirt boxes I have (and i have several) it sees the most use...as for the Distortion + (I have on of these too) the Dunlop reissue sounds like crap IMO, the original MXR units have a cool sound but it is more like a beefy fuzz (if you use it with a very clean amp tone) than a distortion...that said if you run it into an already cranked amp that fuzzy thing kinda gets lost. Randy Rhoads is not a good exaple because he also used an EQ pedal with the mids pushed WAY up. I do like the Distortion + except for one thing...you can turn the lever all the way up and when you turn it on there will be a drop in your volume...when I use mine I use it with a booster AFTER the Distortion plus to be louder not more Distorted...both are very cool.
