Played a few distortion pedals today...
I'm broke lately and just sold off my vox amp (which had its own distortion channel(s)) and needed a pedal, so I went to the local nearly empty bargain basement non namebrand carrying broke ass music shop and found a bunch of dinosaur pedals.
Tried them through a telecaster as that was the best way to replicate the jag/mustang in the store... as well as being the only genuine fender and not ripoff brand they had. not that that really matters
Dinosaur pedals are still in plastic casings much like the FAB I had, but seem about ten times as durable (the FAB broke in less than a day)... Anyone heard of them? Free feel to tell me how much they actually suck.
(btw the tele was surprisingly good but EXTREMELY heavy)
anyway.
No need to cause suspense, the Dinosaur Overdrive is what I went home with. Seemed to give a very natural, clear, defined, sound, good for... Dinosaur Jr. type sounds. It seemed to lack a bit of meat through the Kustom (I think) tube amp I tried it to, but the Jordan I play through naturally is very bassy and mellow so I decided this would be compensated for. I was pretty much right. Through my amp (through which my low output pickup equipped guitars won't distort, ever) it sounds about right for believe it or not Dinosaur Jr. which is what I was going for. Not too chuggy or metal.
The Dinosaur Distortion sounded honky and nasal and too smooth for me, and I really just ruled it out. It didn't even seem to distort as much as the overdrive. No good imo.
The most interesting pedal I tried was a Rocktron Zombie. I actually sort of wish I could have bought it but it was $80... It had a very odd, scooped sort of sound that was also sort of bright, but I figured this wouldn't be unwelcome with my amp. Through the Kustom, it didn't sound bad once things were tweaked accordingly, it had "sing" and something else indeterminantly labeled knobs, I just remember that the pedal, while giving a good sound, was noisy as hell, and I KNEW that my single coil, low output, unpotted pickup guitars wouldn't really like that.
I tried a rocktron Metal and a Dinosaur Metal that were both pretty generic, but in the end was taken with the definition of the Dinosaur overdrive.
I know no one really cares about me raving about cheap ass, $40 pedals but I do like the overdrive. It doesn't mud things up, but then again I could want a bit more distortion... Just a tone, level, and distortion knob, and everyone knows I could always want more knobs too. But it sounds good for what I want to use it for, think Dinosaur Jr. or even Placebo if I use the neck pickup.
