Alllrighty ... being in the depths of a no distortion hell ... I need gain!

So the max I'm looking to spend probably 180-225 dollars US here.

I'm leaning towards tube, but then I'd have to go second hand.

Ideally I'd get probably a Budda Phatman, Zen, or either the Mesa V-Twin or H&K stuff.

But I need more suggestions people ...

a good sounding distortion

Re: Distortion Quest

Can't go wrong with A BOSS Metal zone. Anyone who says they suck doesn't know how to use it correctly.

Re: Distortion Quest

Roctron Metal Planet, it's like a Keeley MT-2.
MXR Double Shot, Very very good distortion for the price, IMO.

Re: Distortion Quest

boss metal zone is a good pedal.. and so is the ibanez smash box, but imo, you can get more sounds out of the metal zone if you play with the settings enough

Re: Distortion Quest

I've used the MT2 for about 3-4 months one time ... and I know that's not what I'm looking for. It's alright with tube amps but what I'm using is solid state ... so I'm looking for more warmth than I got using the MT2, and to be honest I'm no fan of the DS-1 either. I find Boss distortions too ... almost smooth sounding.

Not saying the Metal Zone is bad ... but I really didn't find a sound that I liked with it

I should have clarified what good sounding distortion was like better ...

I'm looking for two main sounds a.) a meaty low-medium gain growl, dark and punchy. b.) full bodied high gain with a gritty bottom end and smoother top end.

Re: Distortion Quest

Get Pickups like mine, you will never get outta a distortion haha even on a clean amp...(live wire hm)... id say go with the Boss too,

Re: Distortion Quest

I'm not sure what the reviews are, but if you like Mesa type distortion, you'd probably like the new Digitech "Disturbed" pedal. Looks like that band Disturbed's tone in a pedal.

Fulltone Fulldrive will serve you well as will the Banzai Coldfusion and the Tone Bone Classic and Hot British pedals. All these are phenomenal (well, I don't know about that Digitech one, but if you're looking for that style of gain, it probably won't be too far off).

Re: Distortion Quest

Definitely the G2D Morpheus

The sound samples are a little too scooped for my liking (I put more mids in there) but here's the best description I've read of it (from Harmony Central):

"Guitars I use are: Tom Anderson Drop Top with H/S/S Anderson pickups, and a Gibson Les Paul Classic with 500T in Bridge, and 496R in the neck.

My amp is a custom designed one called the Cruiser, primarily setup as a clean type amp to work well with stompboxes. 45-watts running into a cabinet equipped with a Vintage 30 and a Vintage 10.

This pedal is a great one to come close to emulating a Mesa Boogie Rectifier tone with a bit of the Marshall smoothness around the edges of the distortion. This pedal has 3 times the gain amount of the G2D Custom/Standard Overdrive on the "Red" side (check out the reviews on that one as well). The tone control is strictly a mid-cut or mid-boost, does nothing with the highs and lows. The lows from this pedal are set at a perfect frequency to get that heavy Mesa chunk, and the highs have a nice vocal, airy quality to them. I own their Cream Tone and their Standard, and love this one equally as well. It stood up well against a Mesa Single Rectifier a friend of mine plays through, and I could get that old Santana type of lead tone using the Paul on the neck pickup very nicely. The main difference between this pedal and a Mesa amp may be a little in the amount of "hair" around the distortion, the amp has a bit more, but that's where the pedal's Marshall quality seems to smooth it out nicely.

The competition for this pedal was my Tonebone Hot British which covers a lot of sonic territory and is as smooth and beefy as you can get. It is totally voiced for High Gain Marshall, and I wanted another over the top distortion with a Boogieish voicing, the guys customized this one nicely and it did not disappoint me when I gave it an acid test 1 day after receiving it. You can hear your guitar ringing out through all the gain, which gives you your own sound and tone.

The gate feature on the pedal is very smooth, and you can take it completly out by turning it counterclockwise, or you can use it to give yourself a total staccato feel for playing tunes like Metallica "One"."

That pedal's called the Weapon, and its Dan Donegan's sig tones. Its pretty cool.... tube stack distortion, citar simulator, auto-wah... its got some goos stuff

Re: Distortion Quest

I highly recommend the Mesa V-twin for solid state work. It sounds great even with headphones plugged straight in!

Re: Distortion Quest

Soldano do the best tube distorsion pedal i've ever heard... very expensive though, goes for about $450 new.

You could pick up a used one...

Re: Distortion Quest

Do you still have your MT-2? If so, I recommend sending it in to Robert Keeley for the Twilight Mod.

Re: Distortion Quest

How about one of Tech 21's Double drives? Really authentic warm valve tones, that do exactly what you described you wanted:

"I'm looking for two main sounds a.) a meaty low-medium gain growl, dark and punchy. b.) full bodied high gain with a gritty bottom end and smoother top end."

Sounds like this could be the pedal for you. I love it, would buy it if i had the cash.

I had one of the Tech 21 Double Drives and I was pretty dissapointed with it...Returned it to Musician's Friend and bought the Reissue TS808...Love that pedal.. :)

Re: Distortion Quest

After hanging around the Tech 21 site I took a gander over at the Sansamp stuff.

The GT-2 is the closest to what I'm after with the California and British settings ... but I don't know ... arg.

I think I'll bite the bullet and take the GT-2
