Hello everyone, first post on this forum, glad to be here!
I just purchased a new Distortion trembucker and would like opinions on if it should be exchanged or not. I'm not new to the Distortion pickup, have/had several, it's my early Lynch pickup! I am also aware that the resistance of a pickup is not the way to determine output.
The pickup was ordered through a big chain guitar store and upon arrival I noticed the following:
1. The plastic case was intact, taped closed as usual, but a bit scratched up.
2. Removed the pu from the case and immediately noticed the black tape was pushed up on one end exposing the thick magnet, spacer, keeper, poles, etc. There was also no obvious, visual signs of wax inside.
3. On the other end of the pu, the tape was slightly pulled down, exposing some winding at the top of the bobbin.
4. The bottom of the baseplate DOES have the wax residue I am accustomed to seeing on SD potted pickups.
5. The wire lead doesn't look tampered with, and is 14" in length.
6. The bobbins appear to be tipped inward toward each other on top.
7. This is the one that has me thinking I got one built on a bad day. The pickup measures 18.2 on 1 DMM, and 18 on another. Shouldn't this pickup be much closer to 17.4?
Did I get a bad one? Out of spec and mishandled? Or is this just how they come now? The others I've had, according to my notes, were 17.2, 17.5, and 16.6 (the latter being an SH-6).
I appreciate your experience and input with this. Thank you!
