hi guys, i,ve been listening to clips of a duncan custom.......dahm, its deep, and has great mid, how does it compare to the distortion for heavy chugga chugga type music?
Should i keep the dd or go for the custom?
The DD compresses a bit more. That compression actually makes it smoother under distortion. The Custom has more punch in the low end, and more "bite" in the high end.
The clean tone on the Custom seems a little more pure and warm. The clean tone on the DD is actually not bad, but I like the Custom a little more for that.
The DD has slightly more string pull.
I had a Custom magnet in a DD for a while - both have ceramic magnets, but the DD magnet is larger, with more string-pull. I liked the tone, but it lacked that character that the DD originally had.
I am partial to the DD (at this time ) but the custom definitely has it's place, depending on your style.
I've used both pickups, and to me the Custom is brighter. The Distortion has a hot-sounding treble bite, but is slightly darker sounding. Like the company describes it, the Custom is like a really loud and hot PAF type sound, where the Distortion is more compressed and crunchy. Both can do chugging riffs pretty well, but I think the Distortion is better suited for it.
And, yeah, the Custom has better cleans (to me), but the Distortion's cleans are still useable.

both are great pups but the DD has the edge over the custom for chugga chugga.
the DD has more growl as well.
I like the custom for the more pafish type tones, like a hot ac/dc or michael schenker tones.
the custom is a very good pup though and i feel that you and only you can be the final judge to which is best for you? for me when it comes to chuga metal stuff the DD remains supreme
