Distortion vs. Distortion...

I have a Jackson SL2H that I am going to change out the pickups on.

For the bridge I have it narrowed down to the following two pickups:

Dimarzio Super Distortion
SD Distortion.

I know the EQ curve for each is different.

How are they different and how are they similar.

Any experience with both would be appreciated.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

super distortion is more of a "vintage hot" sounding pickup. It's much more mid range oriented and very "muffled" which is pretty much the dimarzio magic. The SD distortion, on the other hand, is *very* aggressive, ultra hot and thus will push your amps front end hard, probably into distortion even with clean setting.

SD distortion is bright and mean sounding and super distortion is more like hot and balanced.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I wouldn't call the Dimarzio SD "muddy". It is thick and warm with a big bass response and slightly dipped mids. It is a foot thick angora wool sweater. It is a very versatile pickup.

The Duncan distortion is loud, resonant and aggressive.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

The frequency response (or "EQ") is an irrelevant detail.

The Super Distortion ("SuperD") is a lower class wind, possibly awg43, wind but it has hex polepieces in both rows.

The Duncan Distortion ("DD") is a high wind with awg44 wire and it has PAF-style polepieces.

The SuperD is much more articulate (or assertive) due to the hex polepieces. The SuperD has an unusually wide dynamic range, it can sound pretty close to low-wind pickups and it can be a very decent screamer.

The DD is fatter all the way but has a characteristic treble spike that sets it apart from other high-gain ceramic pickups.

The SuperD does, in theory, require a large piece of wood such as a Les Paul to drive it, but of course that doesn't really matter with enough gain. A SuperD in a heavy pig Les Paul Custom can be an unbeatable combination for some things.

The DD should be better in tremolo guitars with anything but high gain.

The DD can take a normal humbucker cover, which might be a factor. Some people are grumpy with Dimarzio for political reasons, which might be another one.

Overall you could argue that the SuperD does medium-gain allround classic guitar rock better, but as I said it requires the right guitar for that. The DD is more of a modern metal pickup.

I think I once expressed it as the SuperD being better if you fight another guitarist (more dynamic range) and the DD is better if you have to defend yourself against the mad keyboarder such as found in modern epic metal bands (fat with high-mods/treble spike that is hard to overcome).

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

the superD is dual resonance, isn't it? could it be 42 and 43?

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I have a Super D in my basswood RG and it makes things alot fatter and warmer. I do agree it has more of a classic rock to heavy rock vibe, and boy does it sound amazing with just a touch of overdrive. Now, what would happen if you took the hex pieces and put them in a DD? I love the hex poles from just a visual point, they look sweet, but how much tonal change could be expected from putting them in a DD? Just as a final positive on the Super D, my god do power chords sound gynormous.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

Honestly, if they weren't named similarly, they probably wouldn't be compared that often. (Note I've somehow never played a SD  )

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I've only owned DDs, never an SD, but lots of my friends had them in their guitars. The Super Distortion is a cool pickup (not into hex poles visually myself), but the Duncan Distortion does have this great characteristic snarl about it...very much a sonic :chairshot (in a good way)

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I've got one of each in Les Pauls of the same era. what are you planning on playing?

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

If I could afford another Lester, Id love to have one with a Super D/Paf pro combo. Super D in a paul sounds amazing. Big and Chunky..

I currently have a Gus G LTD that came with a DD and it is awesome! I figured Id prob have to pull it. I figured it would be too hot or not musical, just all out.. But I really like it. It screams, but has soul too.. A great pickup for ripping

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

i've had both in my les paul before...
the SD i had for a couple months, but i never had a decent amplifier to have it sound best. definitely a full bodied sound IMO
the DD was in there for about 2 years before i decided to go low output pups, definitely cuts through the mix and is very aggressive sounding. It would definitely drive my AC30 into even more overdrive.

for your case considering the kind of guitar, with fretboard and everything. Alder (from what I remember) is decently even across the board tonally...but the ebony fretboard (as well as the trem) might make it a bit bright IMO...

so i'm gonna have to say the SD.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I've got an SD Distortion in my Jackson at the moment and although I thought it was the greatest pup in the world when I got it, I'm now starting to play more mellow stuff with it and am finding it hard to get a nice clean sound as it is so aggresive and high output - kind of what it was designed for in the first place though.

Still sounds fantastic for Megadeth and Metallica type tracks though :)

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

If you like the tone on Dokken's Beast From The East... that's Duncan Distortion.

I've played both pickups, and prefer the DD over the SD. I found the SD to sound kind of flat and have less of an output "kick."

I've played both.....had several Super D's over the years in several guitar but always end up replacing them, usually with a Duncan Distortion.........

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

I have a Duncan Distortion in a Charvel 750XL string thru and it's brutal. Almost too much so. I'm thinking of toning it down with a Super D or a Full Shred.

Re: Distortion vs. Distortion...

well, since I haven't heard back timius, I say Superd - It's the more all around loud pup.
