Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

Hey DLT, you still rockin' the Nomad?

I picked one up from a guy in San Diego for $300 a couple of weeks ago and am really lovin' the amp.

The guy I bought it from gigged with it for a couple of years so the stock speaker is well broken-in and will stay in (probably the first time I've had a truly broken-in speaker).

My criteria were an amp with alot of clean headroom, an effects loop, a good built-in reverb, lightweight, the controls in front, and affordable. The 50 watt Nomad met all the criteria.

Love the clean channel and was using pedals for dirt until I really started messing with it. Now I use the onboard dirt channel and sometimes kick on a treble booster.

Some have said the dirt channel sounds muddy, but I run the soak under 4, the mids full, bass low and treble high and get a nice, vintage sounding overdrive. I hate bitingly bright OD tones so that's probably why I've bonded with the dark drive channel.

I wish I'd bought one of these years ago........they're a steal used and a great bargain brand new.

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

^ The thread killer strikes again....................

I'll resurrect this thread and most likely kill it at the same time. Here it goes.

I just picked up a used Nomad last week, it's in NEW condition. Sounds awesome, but tonight while playing on channel 2 the power/volume seemed to just cut itself in half. It just lost all its balls. I visually checked the tubes while the amp was on just to see what they looked like. They all looked like they were lit up the same way. Nothing really unusual. I'll give it another shot tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in a direction to what may be happening.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

my Belair sid something like that here a while back

kinda sounded great and Hair Metally for about ten minutes
then just howled with feed back

mine was a cracked solder joint that would heat up

ohh-ohhhhhh---- wait.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get a small pedal cable and jump the send and return jacks together for the effects loop

thats what that was

those are notorious for that

all my amps do it

try rotting it out with a q-tip and alcohol
followed by plugging and unplugging the jack in each one

may have to eventually replace those jacks

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

Thanks ehd, I'll try it out later. I'm gonna still keep a close eye on the tubes. Yesterday they all looked like they were glowing the same brightness, but on my Blues Jr. when I had this problem, one tube was always bright red. It was so random and annoying.

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

Ok, I took the back off to look closer at the tubes and this is what I found.

4 - Sovtek 7025/12AX7WA
1 - Groove Tube GT12AX7C (ecc83/7025)

I'm wondering if all 5 of those tubes should match? Does 12AX7WA differ much from 12AX7C? Should I just order a new set all matching?

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

mine dont

as for the power tubes they are matched rubys

but the preamp tubes

they are
V1 Groove Tube
V2 Ruby
V3 Ruby
V4 Sovtek

Re: DLT's Carvin Nomad Review

wheres your Groove tube at?

heres an excerpt from the data sheet
here

b) TUBE REPLACEMENT GUIDE
It is not uncommon for tubes to malfunction during shipping. If your amp is not working properly
first check all connections and settings, and refer to the following tube replacement guide.
1) The 12AX7A preamp tubes are the smaller of the 2 types, and are located in the following order on
50w models: V1, V2, V3, V4. On 16w models these are V1 and V2.
To start with, V1 is located closest to the input jack. It is recommended to turn your amp upside
down to replace tubes. All tubes are keyed in the same direction.
Replacing V1 (and/or V2 on 50w models) may help reduce feedback due to microphonics.
If the power amp is not functioning, check or replace the power amp driver (16w models = V2,
50w models = V4) Check V4 by inserting a signal into the Effects RETURN jack. If the power amp
still does not work, replace the EL84 power tubes.
2) The EL84 power tubes are located in the following order on 50w models: V5, V6, V7, V8.
On 16w models, these are V3 and V4. Normally you’ll want to replace these tubes as a set.
Sometimes you can spot defective power tubes when they are glowing red-hot along with an
audible hum in the speaker when the amp is idling. If this happens, shut the amp down immediately.
After the tubes have cooled down, carefully pull straight out to remove. It is recommended to
turn your amp upside down to replace tubes. All tubes are keyed in the same direction. Running
defective power tubes could damage the amp. It is recommended that you have a spare set of
EL84 power tubes along with several 12AX7A preamp tubes.
