I think C minor is the best key for the blues - for me it is in right in the middle between sad, happy, and moving. Haha! Yes, +1 to fingerace - great explanation. I think major 7 and minor 7 chords have this very meloncholy tone, like sorta sad, but not crying. 6 chords are romantic

I thought it was because Dm was orphaned as a small child and had to grow up in various hostile and sexually abusive foster homes.

Maybe I'm way off base with this.

Back a long time ago before even tempered tuning stuff played in different keys did sound different besides the frequency shift. I read that's why they would compose stuff in different keys. Such as "so so in the key of Dm" and "whatever in the key of C", etc.

Folks with perfect pitch in particular beleive that each note has it's own quality or color. So if you know any, ask them.

The amp knobs going to 11 never really made me laugh that much. probably cause I'm used to seeing the Hot Rod fender amps that go up to TWELVE!! SUCK ON THAT MARSHALL!!!:lol:

I love that movie sooooooo much though. BTW, if anyone likes Spinal tap and Punk rock, check out Hard Core Logo, directed by Bruce McDonald and starring Hugh Dillon (singer of The Headstones) as Joe ****. Absolutely awesome movie. It was made in Canada so you'll find it in the foreign film section (even in Canada).

IMO, the Dm chord at the 5th fret is sadder than the open position Dm chord. And it's not just when you add the open E string, though that emphasizes the effect.

I have no idea why, but you can play Cm at the 3rd fret, C#m at the 4th, Ebm at the 6th, and yeah they sound like minor chords, but play Dm at the 5th fret and it sounds positively despondent.

Aswith all the musician lore that was lampooned on Spinal Tap, there's a grain of truth to it.
