DMZ Fred(Another)In Bright Strat Body Advice...Blueman?

Re: DMZ Fred(Another)In Bright Strat Body Advice...Blueman?

I notice the E,A,and D strings are a little quieter now because of the warmer pure nickel strings...Tomorrow after I give my ears a rest,I'll slightly raise the bass side of the pickup or adjust the poles..

I even thought about changing the allen head screws on the back coil for the bigger slotted screws but I don't feel I need to..

Anyway...Awesome!

I originally had a JB in this guitar and even after magnet swaps,I just couldn't warm up to it..The mids are too out front and the pickup is too hot for my tastes..I've tryed the JB in different guitars over the years and I always end up with a 59,PG,Fred,Brobucker..I Like a bridge pickup in say a slightly overwound PAF around that 8 to 10k area..I have to be able to keep note clarity and prefer to let the amp get me the rest.

Re: DMZ Fred(Another)In Bright Strat Body Advice...Blueman?

First, Nice to see you round again Stratdeluxer! Second, sorry Ive nothing helpful to add, but sounds like you found your solution. Third, why am I posting then?? Well, Ive always been curious about the Fred and some of the other Satch pups, but except for the Satch Track, TZ and Super D, ive never really bonded with the other DMZs Ive tried. So, Im leary of laying out scarce cash to try other ones. So.. sounds like you obviously know the Fred well.. Can you compare it to anything Duncan? (differences) Like: compared to JB, its less out put, more mids, softer highs, more bass. easier to get harmonics, etc... Also, does it have that cocked wah thing that so many DMZs seem to have?
Thanks

Hello buddy and thx..

It's not at all like a JB and doesn't have the obnoxious mids and higher output.I never bond with a JB in any fashion.

To me it's more on the lines of a slightly stronger 59B or the PGB with slightly un-balanced coils. It's a nice pickup in that it cleans up really well and yet has these cool harmonics with gain.

It stays pretty articulate with higher gain also.

I have it so I can split and parallel it also. The split tones are a bit thin but doable and I do use it alot.

It works best in a darker axe like mahogany or basswood imo.I don't feel like it has a cocked wah tone?

I had to tame it back a bit via the UOA5 mag.Blueman likes using it with 250k pots and with this pickup I can see this as a right direction, though I've not tryed this specifically on the Fred.

And yes I've been using this pickup since it came out around 1989 or so..I Like it alot.

If I had to compare it to something like a 59B,I'd say it has more mids,it's brighter, and has a good amount of bass..It' measures around 10k or so and is an A5 pickup.

Re: DMZ Fred(Another)In Bright Strat Body Advice...Blueman?

I might add...People seem to compare this to the Scremon Demon but other than the dc readings near 10k I didn't think so.I had this pickup and hated it...I owned the SD before alot of us started doing the magnet swap thing in our pickups..

At that time before Lew turned us on to A4 mags,it was only A2,A3, A5 and ceramic which I never swap to...Wonder how the SD does with a magnet swap?

I love UA5, especially at the bridge. But I have one in an old Shaw in neck position and it's great there too. Glad to hear it's worked its magic for your Fred.

Thank you so much...Yeah the Fred is alot better now..Wilma is happy too! LOL

I really like these UOA5 s also..I love A2 in the bridge but this is just a better magnet option and the best of both worlds of A2/A5.

Thank you!!! Yeah, I was only using the JB as an example.. 59b was a great one to compare to as Ive used that pup in both the neck and bridge position.. So, your info is very useful.. I may have to try one.. And the cocked wah reference was cuz alot of Dimarzios have (and even say in their literature) a bit of a wah tone to them. Thank you again!
I usually get what I need with Duncan pickups, but Im thinking I might find something really fun in a DMZ.
I just havent found the one to trip my trigger yet. Aside from the ones I mentioned. I just cant afford alot of trial and error right now..
