do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

Chickenwings

Alnico 6/8
How long would that take? Woulkd they lose their charge if not used? What conditions woulkd cause it?
Any info would be appreciated. CHeers!

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

i'm not an expert on this, but my understanding is that they'd age gradually over time in the same way as alnico V; SD ages A2 mags for antiquity soapbars in the same way they age A5s for the bro and antiquity HBs.

don't drop them either, that'd definitely do it ; ]

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

Seymour says that if they are stored in close proximity to each other (ie: stacked on a shelf or thrown in a box) that they will demagnetize.

Also using a soldering gun that has a coil in it will do it too.

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

They lose a bit immediately after being fully charged. After that, assuming they are not exposed to physical shock or another magnetic field, they lose next to nothing for decades afterward.

Storing pu's or magnets close together does not necessarily demagnetize them. If opposite poles are always facing each other they should be fine. But if it's N facing N or S facing S, there will be some degaussing.

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

when I went to "charge " the ones I got from Mojo tone
the machinist where I work informed me that A2, A3, A5, etc were grades of tool steel

and different grades accepted charge in varying amounts

on the large surface grinders, a large electromagnetic plate holds the tool steel being worked as the grinding wheel passes over

after the resurfacing, some residual magnetism is still in the part and must be degaussed

they will hold their magnetism indefinitely, once again depending on the grade of steel

( the electromagnet is how I charged my magnets )

placing the magnets in opposing fields will degauss them or change the properties

leaning them against the back of an amp, storing near high voltage lines, etc

placing them on large magnets won't discharge them it may change the field to something less desirable
make the poles at either end, reverse the poles, or (as in my first attempt at charging)
create two separate poles running perpendicular to the bar

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

Some old-timers say that A2 does weaken on its own; I hate to contradict Dan Erlewine, but I've got physics on my side. Still, they can weaken for lots of reasons. Anyway, if they degauss a little, they get a little more chime -- some people do this on purpose! If they degauss too much, just charge 'em back up with a stronger magnet. If your rig's active, just strengthen and weaken until the tone is what you like.

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

how long do you guys think it would take to weaken magnets that were stacked on top, ive had them for about 2-3 months like that. is that too long?
i feel stupid now.

shouldn't hurt 'em

as jafo said
just recharge em

Re: do alnico 2 magnets lose their charge?

Magnetic materials can show their magnetic properties in certain magnetic, temperatures, cyclic conditions.

A ferromagnetic material is exposed to higher temperatures than its Curie Temperature, it loses its magnetic properties due to polymorphic transformations in crystal structure. Strong magnetic fields or weaker but cyclic fields, either, have an effect on permanent magnetic materials.

For AlNiCo V (8Al13.5Ni24Co3Cu) critic temperature is 1160 K*

But guessing or foreseeing how will they long, its another thing...
