During my first year of playing, I was also in my first year of medical school. My room mate at the time had this cheap toyish guitar, and the frets were really low- some of the high frets were almost flat into the neck. Practicing on that guitar made my fingers pretty strong. But once you find your preference (fret wire dimensions, neck dimensions, scallops, etc.), your playing style adapts to it.
