Though its a matter of personal taste, it sure does! Woods, construction, speakers...the combinations are many as are the tones. I assume you are talking about like for like, such as one type of 1x12, 2x12, or 4x12 to another. For instance, I used a Line 6 Vetta head with a Hughes & Kettner Triamp cabinet loaded with Celestion G12H80 speakers, which were the same speakers Line 6 used in their cabinets, but to my ears, the Triamp cabinet sounded worlds better, giving better tone at lower volumes and just a bit more 3D sounding and full at higher volumes. I also had a 50 watt 1973 Marshall, bone stock, that sounded killer through my Earcandy 2X12 with a Celestion G12H30 and V30. Others may not like either of these combos, but the difference in tone is audible. Hope this helps a bit.

Re: do certain cabs make a difference?

They make a huge difference. We're talking about a plywood box with a bunch of giant paper midrange drivers in it. It's not this un-colored, sonically neutral delivery platform for your sound that some people think it is. And different models are sonically colored in different ways.

People mix and match heads and cabs. A lot. Not everyone buys both pieces at the same time; they look for deals and buy what becomes available. Some players may not like the cab that "goes with" their head. Some swap cabs and speakers around like pickups, always looking to see if they'll like something else better than what they have. Sometimes you try a different cab or speaker, and the difference is so pronounced that it sounds like you change out the head, too.

Yep.

I just switched my half stack from a mid 80s Marshall JCM cab to a Mesa traditional slant. It sounds totally different. Both cabs are great but they sound really different; the Mesa is much crisper on the high end and tighter in the lows; the Marshall (which is actually a bass cab with 100w celestions in it) has more grunt and a little bit more rolled off/darker highs.

I am not exactly a cork sniffer and my ears are probably nowhere as sensitive to tone as most players, but I can tell a big difference with cabs.

Re: do certain cabs make a difference?

And thats the beauty of buying a head and cab over a combo. With a combo, you can however swap out speakers for different tones.

Exactly! I bought a Bogner XTC head and used it with a regular old Marshall 1960a cab loaded with Greenbacks. When I saved up some money I bought the matching (used) Bogner 4X12.....and I hated it! To my ears it was so stiff and directional. The Marshall just seemed to "breathe" better. I sold the Bogner cab and went back to the Marshall............

As long as the wire protocols and data serialization schemes are compatible it shouldn't be a problem.

You can always get a protocol adapter -- at least until they change processor sockets on us again.

Re: do certain cabs make a difference?

I think afew the new age cabinets are theoretically the very best. Namely the Bogner 4x12 Cabinets, but there are tohers I think.. I mean, if you aren't chasing the Vintage Marshall tone. Of course nothing sounds lke a MArshall amp through a Amrshall cabinet. Thats all for heavy metal.

Re: do certain cabs make a difference?

Huge difference! Over the years I have owned a Marshall 4x12 with 75w Celestions, A Mesa traditional with V30's, a Bogner Ubercab, a VHT/Fryette cab with P50's and a Diezel front load with 100w Celestions. My two favorites and the two I still have are the Mesa and Diezel, but all impart their "flavor" to the sonic brew and of course....some cabs match better with certain heads.

Re: do certain cabs make a difference?

I've got 3 speakers and two cabs (1 closed back, 1 open) for 2 amps running in parallel. There is only 1 combo of speaker/cabinet/amp that works really well, the rest are either dull or harsh.
