Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

Re: Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

This makes me want to bump that thread where that guy wanted the "perfect" bridge pickups and he had tried like 25 alread and wouldn't take anyones advice...
That was a hoot...

Yes I enjoyed that one immensely.

Do it.

No, don't really. Wait a few years. If you're still posting here, do it then.

wasn't he playing through some kind of practice amp with no speaker and expected to cop vai's tones?
i'm always suspicious of people who play "mostly lead".

I think it was some modeling software.
That guy made a very entertaining thread....

Re: Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

Just want to throw in my 2 cents here, BOTH brands absolutely kick ass, but it does depend on your guitar, amp and such. I had a Duncan Invader in an Esp ltd 7 and with the mahogany body and neck, it was waaaay to much bass and mud, I should have got a Duncan Distortion to cut through. Now, I own a Basswood RG and I have gone through tons of bridge pups, Lawrence L500L, Dimarzio Drop Sonic, Duncan JB, and a Dimarzio Super D, which is my current pup. All of these pups are good, but you need to find one that matches your gear/ability. Hands down the L500 is a monster for metal, but if you are sloppy (like me) it will show your mistakes and it is one hell of a loud pup. The D Sonic and JB would be better in a darker, mahogany axe, they just dont jive with the basswood all that great. But in a thinner sounding axe, a fat pup like the Super D, just kind of evens things out a bit. I think all pickups have a place and, it all just depends on the player and thier personal preference.
And the Super D is CRUSHING for metal, so fat and rude, every power chord blasts me in the chest now..

This thread is ripe to post Simone Simons pictures...

Re: Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

I had experiences with most of the Dimarzio and half of the Duncan lineup. Dimarzio's are more smoother like someone said earlier and they have a more rounded sound with a nice modern tone.

Based on my (lesser) experience this is correct. Of course each maker has a huge variety of pickups, so that comments like "Dimarzio is for metal" are incorrect. Nevertheless I have found it generally true that Dimarzio's seem to be designed for a more "singing" tone, with the highs compressed, whereas Duncans are more complex, especially in the upper midrange, even if (and often to encourage) more harshness and bite.

This thread has been raised from the dead twice now.

dammmmmn...

Re: Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

How about a third time....if you are from NY you go Dimarzio...CA Duncan...anywhere else...you do what your favs do....honestly I have not had great luck with Dimarzio and I am generally a Duncan guy. To me they sound fatter less sterile. Then again if you have Vai's or Petrucci's rack you could probably make a stock Ibanez P/U sound good.

^ hey... the great southern threadkill does not appreciate your generalisations

if you're inside the US the cost of shipping should be negligible; if you're anywhere else you do the research, because these guys aren't exactly local

i'm a duncan guy primarily because of the fact that my favorite albums' tones were recorded with them, this forum and it's wealth of info, and the fact that until recently dimarzios were prohibitively expensive here

not to jump on you here man, but such generalisations are divisive and not condusive to a good sound

i currently have a stag mag in the neck and an X2N in the bridge of a tele, and those 2 are making sweet, sweet love in parallel

Re: Do Dimarzios sound fatter than Duncans?

Parallel is great w/an X2N...my 2 cents to keep it going...

yeah i was actually going to wire them both up in parallel originally; i know i like the stag mag like that, and have read that the X2N is quite good in parallel... but my other guitars are offline at present and i wussed out.

that pair would be a great candidate for a triple shot set...
