Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

I have been using $10 Walmart guitar and speaker cables for a long time and they finally crapped out. Is buying $40-$50 guitar / speaker cables worth it? Can you hear a true difference from buying a $10 vs $50 cable?

There is a big difference between the tonal quality of a $45.00 Monster Cable and a $10.00 guitar cord from Wally World. You get what you pay for. If your serious about your sound, than you have to pay a serious musicians price. :blackeye:

Re: Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

right now I am using a $10 GC no brand special
its just fine

you can use a speaker cable for guitar
but not guitar cable for speaker cable

the size and make up of the inner conductors are different
with different resistance characteristics

more expensive cables are made with better insulation and connectors

wire is wire

$40 - 60 Monster or Mogami or Fender for guitar cable. Don't use a guitar cable for speaker. Only use a speaker cable for spkr, 20 guage or bigger depending on power of amp.

Depends on wghat you are doing. If you are playing in your bedroom then I don't think its going to make a difference. If you are playing live & yiou are using a really good guitar through a really good amp... YES! Nothing like a good cable. I use George L's or Monster cables both from my heads to cabinets or from amp to guitar/board. They work great! and yes you can hear a difference.

I don't know. Both my guitars and speaker cabinets are all wireless.

Guitar cables - I personally dont really buy into the hype on the Monster/Mogami/Klotz stuff. Sure there's a difference from Cable to Cable.

I've got a few Whirlwinds I like to use from time to time but generally I use Bill Lawrence "Wilde" solderless cable. Only downside on the Wilde is the tendency to tangle. I have some George L's, very much the same as Wilde except I do not think the plugs are as well made. It takes some care to assemble the cables but if solderless is not trusted, it would not be a big deal to use switchcraft ends.

If you use an onboard preamp (or Active PU's), the kind of cable makes little difference. Just use a quality cable.

Wasn't it SRV that sought out the Radio Shack coiled cables?

I'm even less picky about speaker cables.

Re: Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

I had the experience of a cheap cable that slowly degraded with time. Bad soldering or something.

My tone started to get darker and darker with time, to the point where it got muddy as hell one day and I didn't understand what on Earth was going on.

Swapped pickups in my guitars. Raised them, lowered them. New strings, everything.

Until I realized a cable could have gone wrong. Tried a new one and that was it. The highs and clarity were back and I felt like an idiot. Lesson learned.

So I don't know if it's worth to splurge BIG bucks on Mogami cables.
But it's sure worth it to pay just a bit else for the stuff above the cheapest. For me, it's good enough.

Re: Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

i dont see how an expensive cable would make a difference. all it does it carry a signal from 1 place to another. wouldn't any wire do this just as good as the next or am i missing something?

Just remember,my friends.There's nothing more subjective than,what we're used to say,"product quality"...

Yep - The less expensive and more expensive cables are all different. Capacitances are different, you can get different gauges of stranded wire, etc. Quality wise, they will vary in terms of bang for the buck.

The Neiman-Marcus cables might give you exactly what you want - if it does, then it is worth the $$. YMMV. If your heart is set on a Cornish cable for example, just get it and be done with it. I'm not slagging Cornish 1 iota (his product has a STELLAR REPUTATION that lives up to the hype), just been in situations where I settled for something else and wound up buying the something else AND what I originally wanted.

Lots of racks/pedalboards have been wired with Mogami 2524 (and its smaller diameter little brother)

Re: Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

I don't hear a change in tone, but I do hear a difference in the quality of the signal.

More important, there's a real difference in build quality. Nothing like having your cables crap out on you at a gig. Had that happen. All at once. Never used a cheap cable since.

Re: Do guitar/speaker cables really make a difference?

IME the length of the cable seems to have more effect than the brand--assuming gauge of wire is the same in both cases
