Do i need new speakers??

My amp (the '66 bassman) has 2 original Jensen C12NA's in it. The amp sounds wonderful at lower volumes, and good at low grind, but when i turn it up more, the bottom starts fuzzing out, so i turn down the bass knob, and it helps a bit, but the fuzz is still there, and know there's absolutely no UMPH to the tone... would new speakers, or a recone, fix this?? And how much would i be looking at for a good recone?? Or, if i bought new speakers, fro Weber, would i wanna get 25w or 50w (the amp is 50w)??

Thanks!! :)

If it's not the speakers, it could be an old 5AR4 Rectifier tube that's causing the bottom end to fall out at higher volumes. You might consider replacing the $15 tube before you buy $200 (or more) speakers.

Well as far as speakers, the total rating of all the speakers in the cab or amp has to at least equal the output of the amp.

I think it is highly unlikely for the solidstate rectifier to go.

You can test your buzz theory by running a another cab in the external cab output on those amps. Borrow one from a bud or try at a local shop pretending you might be interested in buying.

Thats a real good idea proxy. I'm gonna have to try that.... and i think i know the perfect cab to use. Thanks!! :)

Re: Do i need new speakers??

If your Bassman is still stock you need to get it modded for great guitar tone. They are to bassy otherwise and the phase invertor is often a very weird circuit for guitars in those blackface Bassmans.

The 4 ohm output trannie is almost identical to the 2 ohm output trannie in a Super Reverb, other than the impedence...so killer guitar tone is in that amp.

But mods are needed, IMO.

The C12NA's are terrific speakers...tho they could be getting old and loose. Hard to say where the fuzz is coming from, but I suspect it's the amp itself: tubes, caps, drifted parts, etc. Lew
