Do I NEED this telecaster....

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

IMO, the pre-2012 Fender AVRI '52 is a perfectly good stab at a Blackguard model. I would change the bridge saddles to the slanted/compensated type, the selector switch to neck/both/bridge, the capacitor to a .022uF and the pickups to something with more of a Broadcaster/Nocaster voicing.

Money no object? The SD custom shop "Guitar Shop" '53 Tapped Tele pair via a five way selector switch.

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

FWIW, I have straight Titanium saddles on my relic Tele with B/G benders. Need something with a notch due to the low break angle on the G string. Really have no issue with intonation.

I did see Gotoh is offering bridges with Titanium compensated saddles now. Might snag some of those.

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

Alright, first time I post a thread like this, but I'm on the fence.

Been wanting to add tele tones to my arsenal for a while now. It's been the ''guitar type'' that's been missing from my lineup for quite a while now. I've always had a hard time bonding with the guitar type, but I've always dug the tones. Yesterday I got to play a specific tele that just really worked for me. It's a american vintage 52 RI tele. Here are some specs that make is appealing to me.

- Ash body (lacquer finish)
- Big old U shaped maple neck
- 7.25 fretboard radius
- 21 frets
- Bone nut
- Ashtray bridge with 3 style vintage saddles

So yeah, I don't know much about teles, but I know I can totally dig this specific guitar. Experienced tele guys ; is there anything I should be weary of when considering this model? Any other similar teles I should be looking at? Do I need this guitar in my lineup? Opinions on it?

Any info or opinions on it are much appreciated. Cheers!

Ha! I have this exact thing at home! :D built a blackguard style Tele and got myself a tweed hardcase... I must say its pretty damn nice for my first foray into single coil guitars :)

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

I say YES!!! You can't go wrong with that gorgeous Tele. I got a pair of them myself. An original '69 Thinline, and a 2012 MIM "barfburst" which weighs as much as a small truck. Love 'em both.

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

I have MIJ 52 RI. I replaced almost all the electronics. I have CTS pots a Duncan vintage 54neck pickup and. Jerry Donahue bridge pickup. Those two pickups combine in a really cool way. The neck pickup is really warm and the bridge IMHO is the best bridge I have come across. The guitar just kicks some serious ass. I also had it refretted with 6105 wire which was a huge improvement over those why vintage frets. The guitar plays and sounds great. It was given to me as a gift by a really good friend

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

Well, it's starting to look like we might have a winner here...

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

You won't regret it. They are great guitars. I have a 2004 52 AVRI tele. It has a 55 Antiquity tele bridge, Antiquity II tele neck, CT pots, and an Orange Drop 0.047 uF cap in it. To be honest I didn't need to put the Antiquitys in it. The original pickups were just fine. As probably everybody on this forum can attest to, the pickup bug bit me and I just had to change them (I've done that way to many times).

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

How dare you call that Barfburst,I think it's lovely...

BB would be that Gibby Gecky thingy...

Every time I've had a great revelation in guitars, it's been when I had that same experience.

I bought a Dot on my first Les Paul hunt, for example. I wasn't even looking at 335s, but I played it while I was waiting or something and it vibed with my spirit animal.

Let the universe do it's thing.

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

I was told they were called "barf burst"...so.... anyway I liked it also or I wouldn't have bought it...duh!!

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

No its similar to the finish from that Antigua series in the late 70s. It reminds me of my aunt's refrigerator. Avocado green...LOL

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

Well, I did post another thread, but here is the result of said gas......

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

I'm not a tele guy and I love that model. Its everything a tele should be in my eyes.

Re: Do I NEED this telecaster....

... and in a never before seen move by my part, I returned the guitar to the store to get a refund (they have a 30 day return policy, kept the guitar 5 days). Never before have I not meshed with a guitar the way I was with this one. After 3 days of playing it on a regular basis, I knew right away that it was not going to be part of my main rig in the long run. I hadn't opened anything in the packaging, and the guitar was still mint, so back it went...
