Do I need to be worried about this or not?

Not to go off topic and this is probably a silly question, but is there any reason why passive pickups tend to be tape wound with plastic bobbins and not just housed in a metal case like an active pickup?

I assume it would affect tone but in terms of durability the only thing I worry about with my active pickups is one of the connector pins getting bent.

Edit: I'm guessing this would be similar to putting a metal pickup cover on a passive pickup, but I thought it might be different as well as actives seem to be much more tightly sealed than passive pickups with covers.
Out of tradition, I suppose.

Adding more metal, even if it's not on top of the pickup, changes the pickup's inductance, thus the tone. So does encasing them in epoxy like EMG's. That's why people romanticize unpotted pickups, which I personally don't agree with, but whatever. Not everybody is playing blistering high-gain and loud half-stacks either, so I can see it working for some people.

Then again, Seymour Duncan pickups are not fragile whatsoever. I don't think you hear many accounts on this forum from people breakign their pickups after a magnet swap, and that's way tougher than what 90% of the people use their pickups like.

Yeah, I'd guess it is tradition, like a lot of other guitar things (like pickup rings). I suppose they could use some non-magnetic cover that doesn't affect the sound at all, but looks nicer.

so i talked to duncan and found what i needed from stew mac, size of tape and all of that, tried to place my order and they said/internet i need a new credit card! I have great credit. I have a great credt card wilth money, with stew mac i thought maybe they got something wrong, tried to call them.. Nope online only! I have been replacing parts and pickups for 12 years now(with tech support). I think im done...

Thanks guitardoc I just ordered some, and thanks for all the replies, as far as someone mentioning pickup height yes i lowered it. This pickup reminds me of a jb but maybe just a bit hotter i really like it. I think my next purchase will be a dimebucker, cant wait to try one of those out. Thanks again for all the help everybody; i work so much overtime its hard to get back on here to reply back in a timely manner.
