You don't have to have one, but you'll have zero control over your guitar without at least a volume control. If you want a cleaner tone, or if you need to cut back on the volume for some reason, you'll be out of luck. Plus, I think it would probably look a little strange without at least one knob.

Technically, you don't need any controls on a guitar. On my Epiphone, I only wired in one volume pot because I like a master volume control and I don't really have any use for anything else.

Sonic Youth wire a lot of their guitars without any knobs, purely to withstand all the abuse they're subject to.

you dont need any knobs but its convenient to be able to mess around with the controls while you play for quick tone changes. you can use pedals for volume and an eq pedal for tone maybe to make up for it but it seems like a bother. knobs are the easiest and most convenient way to change your tone. whats there not to like?

I can't imagine playing a guitar that i couldn't tell to shut up every now and then. Feedback is cool but if you stop playing to talk to somebody else in the band or whatever, what do you do? heh

When I take a solo I usually turn the guitar's volume full up. When I switch to rythym after taking a solo I usually turn the volume down. So although I wouldn't have to have a volume knob, I'd have to have a volume control...and having a knob on my volume control would make it alot easier to turn it up or down!:laugh2:
