DO I really need an EQ pedal?

Finishing off my long waited pedal board, thinking about maybe adding an EQ pedal. Do I really need one? If so which one? Narrowed it down to either the 6 band MXR or the 10 band MXR? Heard both are a little noisy. DO I really need those 4 extra frequencies?

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

Do you need an EQ pedal? - Well, I guess that would depend if you're getting the tone you want from your guitar.

Which EQ pedal? - I tried to 10 band MXR EQ. Great pedal, but like you said, the extra frequencies weren't that useful. Its a great pedal tho. I like the lights and its built like a rock. Its also 18v (no battery option) so keep that in mind.

I always end up going back to my Boss EQ. Great pedal, but a little bit noisy if you don't use the correct ACA adapter.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I love mine. Have the MXR but not the 10 band one. To me that is overkill. I have a blackface Princeton Reverb and I get all kinds of overtones with the EQ. Great for scooping as well or driving up mids. You do get some added noise.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I love my EQ pedal. I was quite against running it through the loop on my amp for the longest time and i don't know why. It has increased the tone shaping capabilities 10 fold. perfect for recording as well. When you have your tone and you don't wanna change it but you need to take a little high end hiss out its easy with the EQ pedal. I reccomend. The ten band EQ will need its own power supply though. that's something to think about if you're running a daisy chain.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I think I need one. Dang tube PAs and their one tone knob just ain't cutting the EQ mustard anymore.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

My opinion is no. You get the guitar + amp combo that has all the EQ sweep you need. While I do realise it works for some people, do you really want another filter for your sound?

I've got an old MIJ Boss GE-7 and while it is a nice pedal for what it's supposed to do...it's been sitting in my closet for the past 4 years.

Probably not. It's not like you're tuning a PA system.

it depends, if you cannot dial 'that' tone in your amp, I would suggest to get another amp, but if you're looking for a 'special' flavour sound probably you will need it.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I don't think I'll ever be completely happy with my sound. Never ending battle...

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

Argument #1 is yes, you need one for tonal variety reasons.

Argument #2 is yes, you could use one to determine how your valve amp overdrives. (Like Chas with his proper valve Princeton Reverb.) A bandmate of mine used to use a Boss GE-7 with his Southend-On-Sea era Vox AC-30.

Argument #3 is no. Multi-band EQ should be built-in to your monster Boogie rack as standard. ;)

Not always. And especially not always in a gigging situation!

Cause adding filters to your sound can be badass?

Me, too. And I thank the heavens every time I have it on my board and a guitar starts to feedback due to less-than-ideal gigs when I can cut off the highest frequency band!

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

Are you using it mostly as a high-end roll off, boost, or a tone change? Not debating, I'm just curious as I'm aware you've had lots of live stage experience and also using older simpler designed amps (ie. non-rack).

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

See the amp alone is not really the issue. If you have the amp in the same room, in the same position in a controlled enviroment then you probably don't need an EQ. If you gig out often then you probably want one. Every amp reacts differently to its surrounding. Some venues my amp has been too bassy some its sounded like it hasn't had enough. I use the EQ to keep the same essential sound of my amp but to boost the frequencies that need it.

Oh, I'm not debating, either. :) Just that your post brought up a lot of good points and it was easier to quote.

I am, indeed, using my GE7 as a low pass filter. I have the level set at unity gain and have the top band pulled all the way down. I only use it when I have feedback issues because, as you noted, it adds quite a bit of noise in front of an amp. It's definitely below the noise floor of a cranked amplifier, however, when there's music playing!

The average NYC gigging stage size is ... well, there rarely IS a stage! I'm oftentimes VERY close to the amp and am pumping LOTS of volume. Harmonic feedback is great, but that high pitched whine is unacceptable. Yeah, it's a bit a tone loss, but it saves people from running away during a gig!

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I'm not anal enough about my tone to want one.

I could see getting one as a way to control the texture of my overall tone when i want it -- maybe one of my fuzz pedals will sound better with an upside-down V or a gentle smiley-face-curve EQ pedal before or after or something? -- but there are a lot of effects I'd consider more crucial overall.

If your amp has good clean and good gain and you want another sound? Add one...why not? Your amp sounds bad and you wanna try to fix that? I doubt a pedal will do it.

You've got a good tone and a bunch of pedals and you want one more stomp box and can't think of anything else to get? Why not an EQ? :smokin:

Personally, that Electro-Harmonix Graphic Fuzz is more my style.

If they would make one with Hazarai so i could have all sorts of different settings programmed in and switch between them easily...:saeek:

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

I love my amps tone, thing I don't like is the EQ is shared for both channels. I can get a decent tone with the shared, but sacrificed a lil. That's where I figured the Eq will come in handy.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

^ I can almost see your logic here but unless you rigged your channel-changing switch and the EQ's footswitch to the same button you'd be double-stomping to achieve desired results.

Guess you need a 25-space rack with MIDI-controlled EQ and effects switching.

Re: DO I really need an EQ pedal?

Empty Pockets,

I tried that pedal. I wanted to love it. I didn't like it at all.

Hope you have better luck with it than I did. If you try it, give us a review.
