DO IT ALL: 2 HUMBUCKERS AND A 5-WAY SWITCH 2-vol 1-tone

Hello does anyone have a wiring diagram for a layout like in my heading?
For the 5 positions on the switch, I need these combinations:

1. Bridge humbucker

2. Outside coils of both humbuckers

3. Both humbuckers on full

4. Inside coils of both humbuckers

5. Neck humbucker

Thanks in advance.

On the wiring you request, IMO, positions 2 & 4 sound almost identical. So I would sugest, with a Superswitch, the following variation http://www.guitarelectronics.com/pr...-Humbuckers5-Way-Lever-Switch1-Volume-03.html

Obviously you need a superswitch to pull it off.
Depends. If the OP gets a couple of hybrid pickups, like a 59/custom or p-rails, the sounds he gets with "inside" vs "outside" coils can be very different.

I agree with both of these statements, but assuming that the OP does NOT have some sort of hybrid pickups, consider setting it up like an Ibanez RG:

  1. Bridge HB
  2. Both (Inner Coils)
  3. Both (Humbuckers)
  4. Neck Parallel
  5. Neck Humbucker

I find that I get some pretty versatile tones that way. The only bummer is that you would need to order the right 5-way switch from Ibanez... it's not a typical layout. If you're interested in doing that, I can provide you with a schematic.

This isn't even close to 'do-it-all'. 3 of the 5 are standard on every HB guitar, and the other two are almost identical. You're only adding one sound. A big rotary switch isn't worth that cost or effort. If you're after some real tone variation, you can use push-pulls for coil cut, phase, series, or spin-a-split. You can put in 3/4's of the Jimmy Page system with your 3 pots (or add a tone pot and 'do-it-all'). And with that you can also get both outer coils (both PU's in coil cut) and a 'virtual HB' (bridge screw with neck slug - both PU's in coil cut with phase). There's so much you can do with push-pulls, I don't know why anyone bothers with big, clunky rotary switches.

No I understand it's not close to 'do it all' I posted whilst out walking my dog and it was the first thing that popped into my head. Hoping to get a fast response and not wanting to get a ****e storm of abuse because I didn't mention the kill switch that's going in too etc.
The pickups are a JB bridge and a Jazz neck.
I'm open to any suggestions but don't have time to order another super switch, sorry so I'm using the 4 pole Oak hobby I have to hand.
I'm looking at all of you suggestions and thanks for all your help.

I use this all the time. I wrote a blog about how to do it.. to make all positions hum cancelling and in phase, you will need a Super Switch and for one pickup to be rw/rp (reverse hot & ground, and flip the magnet).

Re: DO IT ALL: 2 HUMBUCKERS AND A 5-WAY SWITCH 2-vol 1-tone

This board is just killer/my hat's off to all the feedback so far and hope this $.02 compliments that :P

FWIW, I had a recent project with a Dillion PRS copy (1V1T + 3-way Rotary selector, 2 Hums) and I went with this diagram for a 6-way Rotary to get these options:
rotary-two-hums.gif

1. Neck only
2. Neck/Bridge in parallel
3. Bridge only
4. Neck/Bridge in series
5. Neck/Bridge in parallel (out of phase)
6. Neck/Bridge in series (out of phase)

...and then did push-pull splits on the Volume and Tone knobs for single coils (Non-hybrid humbuckers here). Mincer's a level beyond me (and plenty of others) in terms of "awesome" factor/wish I had read that first...! But this setup gives me enough variability to have fun. Joe Gore's blog was a huge eye-opener to me though, and his Jimmy Page series taught me that some of the "possible" tones with a "do-it-all" approach suck... but by adding a signal booster you can make them usable/cool. So if I had that third control open like your setup I might look that way for going from "do it all" with the Mega-Switch to "use-it-all" with a Mega + booster :)

HTH as Lt.Kojak would say, and looking forward to responses like, "No way, if you're doing *THAT* then here's an even more awesome option that no one else would have thought of!" which will re-blow our minds and give us all GAS for 2016 :)

Inside coils and outside coils sound different. Or at least they do in all the strats and 24 fret HH guitars I have wired.
In an ibanez rg for instance, inside coils are like a cross between a strat position 2 and 4. I like this one.
Outer coils is more tele middle position, but crappy.

I used to wire my HH guitars like the OP until I discovered the ibanez scheme stated above. Neck parallel is way more usable than outer coils IMO.
I would even take the older ibanez schematic that sub's the neck parallel with neck split. Plus, it is easier to wire and fit in tighter places.

Re: DO IT ALL: 2 HUMBUCKERS AND A 5-WAY SWITCH 2-vol 1-tone

Yeah? I like the outside coils, and can't stand most humbuckers in parallel. So it just depends on what you like. Once you have the switches, you can experiment a lot, but then use a Super Switch to settle on the 5 positions that work. For me, they all had to be humcancelling, and they have to be usable. Funny, the sound I use the least is both HBs together.
