Do listings like these bother anyone else?

Not trying to specifically call a forum bro out but just wanted to see if listings like this bothers anyone else?

I guess the reason it is a pet peeve to me is that when I search for "Gibson" or "Fender" I have to go through a bunch of Epiphone and Squier crap to actually find what I was searching for. I've had several Epiphone Masterbilt acoustic guitars that were amazing instruments but they are not Gibsons. Its like the guys on Craigslist who sell a "American Fender Strat" that is a USA neck on a Squier body or selling "Fender" pickups that came out of a Squier...rant over.

Yeah, it bothers me too. If someone is really misrepresenting what they are selling, let a mod know, and we will 'fix' it.

yeah, i hate that but i understand why they do it. get you more hits for sure

I think this listing is borderline misrepresentation...while Gibson and Epiphone have common ownership, this is not a Japanese Gibson–it is a Japanese Epiphone. But the listing does say it is Epiphone branded...why don't people just call it what it is–an Epiphone is not a Gibson, a Squier is not a Fender, a Charvette is not a Charvel, a Fender USA neck doesn't make a Squire/Allparts/MIM/etc body a Fender USA guitar. lol

My main beef is when you are trying to search for something like parts and you have to scroll through tons of things that are not what you searched for.

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

It bothers me slightly (only slightly) less than people who list everything they have for sale as "rare" or "hard to find"...

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

Yes, "Epiphone" should definitely be the first name in that title...it's a bit too misleading as it's shown in the picture. That said, I don't think anyone with a pair of eyes and at least two brain cells is going to mistakenly purchase it believing they are buying a real Gibson :)

I've seen plenty of titles that indicate "Epiphone by Gibson" and "Squier by Fender" and rarely take issue when they are put that way, though they muddy searches for sure.

I also don't get too hung up on people claiming "rare" and/or "hard to find" in their descriptions as Surgeon mentioned. In this day and age of forums, prominent gear sites, auctions, globalization and mass e-commerce, if you have a desirable item that is difficult to find at regular intervals on the open market, then it's most certainly "rare" or at least "hard to find" as far as the market is concerned (regardless of how many were made).

Of course, I also don't get overly worked up when people call their '80s gear "vintage", either. Maybe something's wrong with me :)

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

I hate it, but what Jeremy said makes sense. People would definitely notice "Gibson" in the name more than "Epiphone."

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

Better than "Klotb LP copy with Gibson strings 2 weeks old".

The search in vbulletin sucks anyway. No big loss IMHO.

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

I don't mind as much anymore, because I've simply accepted it. Heck, my Epiphone has a "Gibson" truss rod cover and my Squier says "Fender" somewhere on it.

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

What really drives me insane is the name of this guitar company:
http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintage-electric-guitars/

So I search for vintage telecaster or vintage les paul and guess what I get, it's a real cynical trick

But brilliant marketing strategy.

Heck, my Epiphone has a "Gibson" truss rod cover and my Squier says "Fender" somewhere on it.

Mine too. And that muddies the issue a bit. If Gibson chooses to put their name on my Epiphone . . . isn't it a "Gibson"? :scratchch

I wouldn't sacrifice my own cred by advertising it that way, but still, it's not really "dishonest" per se.

I edited the original ad. I thought it was misleading/confusing, and I'd like to keep that out of for sale ads here so people feel they can use em.

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

Yeah, vintage is kinda clever. Id be afraid to use that not wanting to be confused with Vantage.. I do kinda like the v6m24 model!!

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

Doesn't bother me at all,as I can't afford anything anyway...
:p

But I get your point.
:)

Re: Do listings like these bother anyone else?

That, and words like "custom", "vintage" and "mojo" bug me when looking at guitar ads.
