Do NOS models ever release later?

Diminished Triad

I've seen a couple relic models I'd be interested in if ever released as a NOS model.
The best example is the Les Paul Tom Scholz signature guitar.....formerly a '68 goldtop.
Is there much chance Gibson will release this model some time in the future as a NOS (new old stock)? Or, once released as a relic, if not simultaneously released as NOS does that usually mean NOS is just not going to happen and we either buy the relic or just don't buy at all?
Thanks!

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

I don't think I'm getting exactly what you're saying. You think Gibson manufactures a large stock of signature Les Pauls but never sells them, let's say just keeps them in the factory, and then years later they release the signature model as New Old Stock? Or are you referring to Reissues where they are brand new guitars fresh off the factory line but have been re-released since the original model was successful? I don't think Gibson has any NOS, you'd have to check dealers' inventory, and I doubt they'd ever reissue a signature model. They make those signature pieces limited in number so as to add rarity to the equation and thus inflates the price.

All in all, quit asking about the Tom Scholz or Peter Frampton guitar. You know you want the Tom Scholz but are having a difficult justifying the high cost for a relic, hence the reason you're considering the Peter Frampton. I think you'll regret not getting the Tom Scholz since down deep with all it's negatives, you still really want it. If you want to buy new, check online or call some dealers to find one new in stock. Gibson might be able to tell you who they shipped the most recent Tom Scholz to.

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

I think he meant NOS as in the Fender Custom Shop vintage reissues having the relic (worn) and NOS (like new) cosmetic options.

Gibson tend to release what they think will sell, rather than what wannabes will dribble over...

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

Fender does lots of the relic releases (although fortunately the David Gilmore model was also available NOS...same for Clapton's)....but Gibson doesn't seem to have many at all - which is why I hope one day they present the choice you have for Gilmore's guitar which is relic or NOS. The new old stock choice is also a re-issue, yes....not truly old inventory.
PRS has a real nice line for Neal Schon.............two guitars actually and no dents or scratches or faded paint on those!
Same for the Santana models....no relics as far as I can see........and I haven't seen many on any of the guitars Santana or Schon play so maybe that's just how it's going to be.

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

I wouldnt hold my breath on it. Though really none of us can say for sure but looking at what Gibson has done in the past I would say probably not. But you never know.

BTW isnt this like your 4th thread about the Scholz guitar? Just buy it already you know you want it.

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

They usually escalate in value. NOS first, then aged, then Murphy Aged for like $9K.

I'd just get a 90's P90 Goldtop and have it stripped and routed for a HB by a competent luthier. (That would be a third of that relic version. $6,665 holy crap....)

Want lots and buy few. :-) Followed group's advice here on a few other guitars and a couple amps too.
Maybe after they all arrive and I'm playing them I'll see how much I miss the Boston guitar. Hard to beat Boston for a great jam......but still just not my thing (at least yet) to pay much for a beat up guitar that was beat up by a luthier.
I remember one of the older members had tons of posts back and forth before he made a decision on an amp and speakers....if I remember correctly. And he had lots more experience then me at least with equipment.....but I think he was right to still bounce it all off the group here.

Re: Do NOS models ever release later?

Anyone into Journey or Neal Schon or like his PRS signature models (he has two).
Looking at one of those closely. The NS-15 seems like a better play to me but it is not as easy to find.
The Neal Schon NS-14 is all over the place and very available. The NS-15 is slightly larger.....with a few other differences.
I understand Neal still practices no less than 8 hours a day..........lots of times he puts in 12 hour days and this is all outside of rehearsals. He truly loves his instrument and to make music.
