Do not like my guitar tone

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Dave Locher I might look into solid state but I think I prefer the sound and dynamics and tubes offer? Plus I want to try a couple of alternatives for a valve amp before heading to the solid state camp

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

That little 6505 MH is a nice little amp. Good luck to you, dont worry about "that Guy". Have fun

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

I have looked at peavey and I considered them, but on the Marshall forums someone mentioned to me to check out the EVh 5150 eiii and holy crap I literally shat myself! I want to try one and thank god I have on at samash that I can try! They look great and sound great too!

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Buy a $99 Squire Mini and a battery amp. You will soon appreciate the tone of your Soloist and Marshall DSL40.

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

If you think gain derived primarily from preamp tube distortion sounds good, you belong to the class of people who think guitars should sound like bees in a can.

Seriously, I told him to get some earplugs and crank up the master volume on the amp when he gets a chance. He's going for a tone that's gotten by cranking an amplifier such as his. Pantera is pretty much the only example he listed that's not a cranked Marshall.

In your opinion, who has a good guitar tone that's from cranking the preamp gain and keeping the master volume really low?

Sounding like whatever guitar player is 95% about nailing the subtleties of technique and feel.

I think you're the first person i've ever heard saying only power amp tube distortion sounds good. It's a grotesque perversion of a common notion that may hold some merit. Getting the power tubes involved sure sounds a little better, but it's not like you can't play distorted guitar sounds to good musical effect with only the preamp tubes pushed. It's silly.

Who said anything about keeping it "really low"? I'm just saying it's ridiculous to require rattling the walls every time you play.

I agree with you! Turned my amp to 4 yesterday and the only thing that resulted out of it was it caused my walls to rattle and things in my room to start falling and my ears ringing after that. Didn't even really help my tone out very much either, in fact a prefer it at the lower volume

I have a squier and a fender mustang I v.2 amp. I have played on that for a long time and in fact I play it every once in a while and trust me my marshall and jackson have a far superior tone compared to that. I don't know how this answers my question or helps me? Just because I don't like the tone of something I should play on something inferior and sounds terrible for what? To appreciate the gear I have? I already do, but it isn't doing it for me. So what is the point of me doing this anyways?

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

I guess that Marshall just isn’t for you then.
But don’t rule out the Blackstar just because someone on the Internet said something negative about it.
If you have played through it and liked it, then it’s for you.
If it’s good enough for Nita Strauss....and she has monster tone.

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

I am not ruling it out entirely, I just prefer the EVH over the Blackstar now. Plus the blackstar I didn't crank it loud enough to get it really loud. Like at 1.5-2 is the loudest I have cranked it.

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Sounds to me like you like the more saturated type of tones.

With that said, clips my man!

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

clips my man!

I will get some clips out today, they are not the best representation of what I am hearing on the other end, but I will post some. What would you want me to play in the videos to be more specific? Also can I have some of my pedals in the rig or no pedals?

Yeah, the new 50w EVH sounds KILLER!!

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Funny thing is that every person on this forum was unhappy with their tone at some point, which led them here. My first suggestion when anyone is at a loss as to their tone is to work on the actual playing part. Use no pedals, and no distortion. Learn to manipulate the tone with your fingers, and the controls on your guitar. After a year or 3 you will have a better understanding of what you need/want.

I looked at my original post, and realize I forgot to put bad in quotes. That may account for some of the misunderstanding. Preamp tubes obviously play a part.

He listed a bunch of times he likes as a guide for what he’s after. None of them are a result of an amp whose power section isn’t cooking.

Only 4? :scratchch

Here's the thing with amps like that - they're not designed for bedroom playing or whisper-quiet levels.

The amp owner needs to do one of the following:

- be able to play with the amp cranked
- learn ways to tame the volume with the amp cranked (slaving, ISO room, ISO cab, attenuator)
- be satisfied playing the amp at extremely low volumes with the corresponding extremely crappy tone

Also, and I may be wrong here:
I think I remember the op saying in an earlier post that he had the gain way low too...
Turn that gain knob UP!! That will get some saturation at low volume levels.

Play whatever you enjoy playing! And do some with them all off and some on...just wanna get a taste of the tone (yes I know it will just be an iphone or whatnot) and your playing.

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Gtrjunior on low volumes I would have the gain up to like 7-8 on low volumes. When I had it cranked I turned it down to like 5-7 and got some decent tones out of it.

Re: Do not like my guitar tone

Kamanda, I got it I will do a couple of songs and use both of my guitars to give a demonstration.
