Re: Do People Sell Guitars because they Can't Set Them Up Properly?
Joe,
To answer your question, I think some decent electric players like me have sold guitars because we didn't know you could improve the tone through pickup swaps, pot adjustments, etc. I know that one of the reasons I sold my beautiful PRS was that I thought it was too muddy in the neck position. That has been 4 years ago and if I'd known that a different set of pups, changing the actual height or polepiece height, or changing the pots and caps would have made a difference, I would have kept her. She was a real player and I'm sad she's now gone because no one ever told me that you could make such tonal adjustments with basic part swaps.
This was prior to the advent of the guitar Forums and prior to everyone sharing their collective knowledge on the web. The guys in my guitar shop in Charlotte were tremendous players, but they never told me that changing parts could make that much of a difference. Perhaps they didn't know or perhaps they didn't care to tell me - doesn't make a difference now.
As for how a guitar physically plays, I've never sold a guitar over that issue - just over tonal issues.
