Do Smaller Cabinet Dimensions Typically Yield Better Clarity?

Guitarist

Mesa-ologist
I have an oversized Mesa cabinet, and I love the tone, but am still dialing those knobs for more clarity and definition.

Not sure.... but i use 2 different 1x12 cabs and a single 4x12 cab with my various heads, and the smaller 1x12's i find i'm pumping the bass controlls as high as i can get them.....

As far as oversized vs. traditional, the trad cab is definately tighter, clearer, cleaner, and more hi-fi.

That said, Mesa cab's vs. Marshall styled cab's with the same speakers; the Marshall will be tighter, more balanced, and clearer sounding. The Mesa's have this weird dark/shrill quality about them - I'd grab a 1960AV immediately!

Speaker and CAB combination make difference (2X12's works well in open back cab's in my opinion and for tighter sounds 4X10 or 4X12 in a closed back)
But it matters what amp aswell (VOX's would work beta with open back cab the marshalls generally)

the theory is smaller cabs tend to be more percusive or tighter. larger cabs tend to add natural ambiance as in inhanceing reverb.

Absolutely. One of my favorite sounds (that I'll never get back) was the combination of my large 2x12 with JF Naylor Jensen replicas (still have that one) and 2xPeavey Scorpion 12's in a kicker box. That's right, a super-thin kicker box, with a couple little ports. That cab was so up front and in your face that it sounded like it was 10 feet closer to you than it really was. Up close it sounded like it was in your head.

I don't really want that sound anymore. It was 80's hair-metal crunch time, and well defined super shred leads had to cut through. That part of my rig has long since been replaced with closed back 2x10's with vintage british 10's. Much better! But the small closed back cabinet is often overlooked, because people think a cabinet should resonate like a small room. That's fine, but I'd rather mic a tight cab in a good room. Remember, you can never "un-resonate"! :) Some Mesa 1x12's or small 2x12's would be an improvement for you. (not for everyone)

Re: Do Smaller Cabinet Dimensions Typically Yield Better Clarity?

That's a good question, which I'd like to prove for myself sometime. I still think that 4-12's sound far better than any 2-12, but I recently read a review where a guy compared 2 Bogner 2-12's, the large one that's big enough for a fullsize head, and the smaller Shiva 2-12. He swore the smaller Shiva 2-12 sounded better than the large 2-12. It may have had a little less bass, but the overall sound was tighter. I wouldn't comment, till I heard both side by side.
