Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

Do you agree or disagree with this reply that I got from a guy on another forum. Hey says:

My opinion of them is that if you want a humbucker sound, get a real full sized humbucker, not a 1/2 pint excuse for one.

While they sound good when you're playing by yourself or recording, they are severly lacking in a live band situation unless you're miked and have a good sound man working the board. Otherwise, their lack of dynamic range means that you can't get out of the same sonic area as the drummer and the other guitarist (if you have one). You'll sound muddy and indistinct and your guitar won't cut through the mix. Many guitarists in this situation will turn it up to ear-splitting volumes or use a buzz-saw distortion pedal that will only making things worse.

I disagree. Wheres the logic behind that? Am i the only one who thinks that sounds stupid if that was the case any guitar equipped with single coils and the like would sound like **** live aswell and thats not the case at all.

While its a matter of opinion you do a good job of saying it like its fact.

This is not my reply. It is a reply that I got from another forum. The guy is trying to tell me that single coil size humbuckers won't cut in the mix during live shows.

Sorry bout that. I got carried away cause its quite simply wrong and this guy who said this sounds like a bit of an elitist.

I imagine that the wrong choice of single-sized HB, in the wrong guitar, with the wrong amp . . . at Shea Stadium, could produce those results.

I also imagine that your hearing one person, who had one bad experience vent that frustration. ;)

sounds like BS to me. Some psople like to say stuff, for the singular purpose of saying stuff. he sounds like one of them.

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

I disagree, I doubt they will get lost, unless you don't actually know how to set your amp up?...

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

that guy is an idiot who doesnt know **** bout lil buckers.
he is clearly a bedroom player who doesnt know jack about EQ. what he's describing is clearly a scooped EQ. if you're playing by yourself, it's all neat and perfect, but once in a band you'll get drowned by the bass and cymbals.

murray and gers both use single coil sized buckers exclusively for years now and they sond perfect in a 3 guitar band situation

may i ask on which board you got that? the maiden board is full of suck know-it-alls

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

Sounds like B.S. to me. If you want to be anul about it? Maybe you don't
get the full throuted growl of a full sized? I have NO problem cutting thought
w/t my Lil' 59er.

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

I don't agree. But I will say that if you really want the sound of a full sized humbucker you'll have to eventually get a full sized humbucker. The Little 59 and JB JR are excellant "single coil sized humbuckers" but they don't drive your amp as hard as a full sized humbucker will. Lew

My Li'l Screaming demon in my '73 Strat sounds fantastic in the band mix and the reason I bought it was because I recorded a guy in my studio who had a Warmoth strat with mahogany body with a set of Li'l Screaming demons and that guitar sounded fantastic through my amps and it really cut through the mix of the recording.

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

I agree with Lew too.
For a real full-size HB sound, go with a full-size. However, the single-spaced HBs are great too and deliver some nice tones....

Dave Murray/Janick Gers of Iron Maiden uses JB Jr, HotRail, Lil'59 ... and I dont think they have a problem "cutting thru the mix".... ;)

I agree. The minis are excellant sounding pickups in thier own right. I used to get an amazing sound out of my white Strat when I had a JB JR and a set of SSL-1's in it. Didn't really sound like a full sized JB...but it was still a very inspiring tone, especially for soloing.

I have a set of Antiquity Surfers in that guitar now though.

I disagree. But still I think he has a point, although the overall conclusion is simply wrong. Lil ones have magnetic fields similar to that of single coils, and not full sized buckers. I am sure that SD folk wound them so that this wouldn't be very noticable, but still I think a JBjr. is more single coil (having some of that strat bridge single coil tones) than a real JB.

I agree with Lew, if you wanna get a HB eventually you gotta get a real HB.

It has alot to do with the size of the pickup I think. A full size humbucker is wider and senses two points on the string an inch apart. The JB JR, Little 59 or Little SD sense two points on the string less than 1/2 an inch apart.

Also they are just totally differant pickups with little magnets instead of full size magnets, thinner copper wire so Duncan can get lots of wire wound around the two much smaller bobbins, etc.

I think mini humbuckers should be judged on thier own merits and that names like the JB JR or Little 59 are fine but are primarily marketing tools...because the minis have thier own great tone and don't really sound like the pickups they are named after.

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

Yea, they're not accurate at all. If that were the case, there'd be no demand for Teles, Strats or any instrument that utilized single coils.

Re: Do you agree with this reply that I got about single coil size humbuckers?

Sure, they have a great tone of their own. Noticably more condensed, (thus somewhat clearer), but still kinda HB.

But generally people want to have HB tones, and get lil's in order not to route their guitars. It's just that they gotta know that there is a diference. Whether or not that difference justifies routing the guitar for a full sized HB is is a subjective question, to which interested people should find their own answers. That's what I am saying.
