Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

i have a friend that has a 50's fender strat in seafoam green, like an original one... and also an all original mint chet atkins tenneseean (spelling) in wine red with the original users manual in perfect condition, and here is the kicker... HE DOESNT EVEN PLAY! he just inhareted the Gretch and the fender was given to him by his friends dad because it has a big ding on the face of it... BUT IT IS A FRIGGIN NICE STRAT! my other friend who plays bass recieved a Custom Washburn with and alder body swamp ash top, maple and walnut 5 piece neck through, rosewood fretboard, and some cool pickups that he is giving me the bridge pickup... too low output for him so he had a D-Sonic laying around that he put in it, which soon will have an A8. But it is a double cut in a transparent maroon colour. I am not so jelous that they have the guitars but rather that they have them and dont play them, not sell them to me, or even let me borrow lol. it bugs me when people get nice gear and leave it idle

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

I have buddies that constantly run into these crazy "deals" on stuff--guitars, amps, etc. One of them went to buy a guitar from a guy that he worked with. The guy used play guitar 30 years ago but hasn't really touched it since. He goes over to his place to buy a 60's Fender Jaguar. The guy sells it to him for $250. Barely a scratch on it. To top it off the guy says he has a box of old effects and cords and stuff and the wife has been yelling about the guitars and the old boxes laying around. He says to my buddy, "Why don't you just take the boxes, I know you'll use the stuff." The box was filled with old vintage effects all in great working condition--including an old Echoplex. And much like your friend, my buddy just picks up the guitar casually. I never find stuff like that.

You will see plenty of this over the years, people buying the very best gear and being too busy working to ever play it, people lucking into outrageous fortune etc. It can be hard to take sometimes.....but......there is a way to have your evil revenge.......MwahahahHAAAAA!!!!.....

simply get awesomely good at playing......you'll win hands down every time........

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

I've got a mate who has a Jackson Soloist SL1 (2000 or 2001 if I recall), always makes me feel jealous when I hear about it, even though my own guitar plays and sounds just as good.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

I've never been jealous over equipment because my needs are modest and I've always been working enough that I can afford what I need.

I have been jealous of friends who seem to have opportunities fall in their lap when I feel I've worked and sacrificed to get where I am musically. But I see that as a personal weakness on my part.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

yeah my friends parent's allow my buddies to buy literally whatever they want. My parents sure as hell don't let me buy anything. They still have the "you already have a guitar, you don't need another one" mindset. My friend's parents buy him guitars (just got him a Gretsch Electromatic for graduation), and my parents resent me buying ANYTHING guitar related. My dad rolls his eyes when I buy strings......

And I have a another friend who lets his dad's late 90s MIM Tele (sunburst) just rot in it's case. Back when I had serious Tele GAS, I was practically beggin him to sell it for me. Its strings are over 2 years old; they're only that new because I put them on there

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

funny thing about my parents is my mom thinks i have enough gear 2amps 15 guitars, but my dad on the other hand wants to buy me stuff, just it is only when he is drunk lol... but yeah anyway also when he is in that condition he keeps trying to give me advice on how to get famous, and i just roll my eyes and ignore it, we use to go to guitarget once a year for one of the List Events, thats where i got my roland recording system for 200 and my line 6 flextone ii hd for 300. which even at regular price at the time was somthing like 8-900 so i lucked out. but the thing is i use them everyday... well the amp, i dont like the recording station i want to get an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

You know that Jackson I have that I got for $67.51? (Yeah, in that case, I'm the one to be jealous of)

Well, I got it from a friend in high school for that low low price because - take a deep breath - his parents got him a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24.

This guy could hardly get a "Mary Had a Little Lamb" out of a guitar.

I was always jealous of that guitar, because I knew I could rock it so much harder. I bet it's in a case somewhere oxidizing

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Me and my buddy are talking about this as we speak, and we only get jelous if someone was better gear and doesn't know how to use it, or doesn't use it period.

Me and my friends have good, but different gear. No reason to get jelous, caus they all play a lot.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

i have some friends with some really nice and expensive new and vintage toys.... i'd love to own some of it no probs but i wouldn't say i'm jelous... i kind of came to grips with the fact i can't own every guitar and amp i see!!!!

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Only once.

It was a Thursday and I had convinced the shop keep to sell me a Ibanez 7 string for a very good price (this is back in the day and it was basically the Jem 7 in black with all the nice things). I told my friend about it that night and how I was going to buy it after I got paid the next day. He went and bought the next day while I was at work. Still pisses me off when I think about it.

Edit: I have to add that is wasn't as much about the guitar as the mentality of my friend. BTW: Those particular 7s are fairly pricy today when found on the used market.

If there's one life lesson you've got to learn as soon as possible, it's to rid yourself of jealous thoughts. It's a mind disease.

There will always be someone who has more than you, and it's not wrong to aspire to that, but it's wrong to have negative thoughts about it.

Your best option is to work hard in life, and practice guitar 10 X harder, and you'll be the better person for it. I'm not trying to sound preachy, but that's really the truth.

How can you view this as a negative? Working for something makes you appreciate it more than someone who's given everything, or has it so easy as to not have to try.

yeah that strat sounds soo sweet but needs to be set up, the action is a bit high but man that neck feels good, i tried to convince him to put me in his will lol

+1. I'm gonna sound a bit snooty here, but I was never jealous of guitar friends, coz I was always a better player than them. I had a few spoiled friends with nicer gear, but I put in a thousand times more effort, and as a result, people were more impressed with my playing than their gear.

Seriously, when two people play and one of them sucks, nobody is gonna go, "Yeah, that guy can't play worth a crap, but look at that amp!"

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Sure, sometimes...but not for their guitars...just for their abilities and hard work.. I'm kind of a lazy player and haven't grown as much as some of my friends....My fault. But sometimes I get a little envious.

-dave

apparantly not enough to do anything about it....duh!

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Not that it matters ..... but I've always thought of jealousy as a fear of losing something you have or think you have, whereas coveting something that belongs to someone else is envy.

Have I ever envied friends for something they have? Yes, but it's never been about gear.
