Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

So i saw this question on another well known guitar forum : (...that will remain nameless)

'So you've got the gain cranked up (max) and you're playing rhythm. What do you do / press to play that solo?'

I told the OP, that he should turn down his gain for his rhythm playing, because an OD pedal will just make a big mush of everything, and i added a YouTube clip to support my suggestion.

However, everyone else who answered, +/- 15 or so, started to name OD and boost pedals left, right and center. Even though he clearly stated he dimes his amp's gain channel.

What would you guys have suggested if the same question got asked over here ?

Here is the clip that i added . . . skip to 7m50sec, until 8m10sec.

GO !

the right pedal can tighten things up nicely and a good eq can pop your solo out in the mix

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

Depends on the amp and depends on the situation. When I run my JMP the gain on the amp is full up on the preamp and i run a TC electronics line driver in front of it. Solo's are accomplished by using a TS9 to punch the face in of all of that. Mush doesnt get anywhere near that rig... It tightens up and just sings. On my MKIV my rhythm tone is actually the lead channel my leads are done on R2 with the Line driver.

Amp is maxed. What do you do? There's a few things one can do.
3) a little trick us older farts do: use the guitar's volume knob; turn down for
rhythm, turn up for solos

+1^ I use a volume pedal and have for years.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

If its something like the aforementioned JMP or JCM800, max gain isn't really too much. A boost/OD with a little mid hump can bring out a lead line.

I understand backing off the gain though.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

An EQ in your effescts loop for a clean boost is an option , Securb and LTF +1 on actual volume control. It really depends on the rig and what you are playing through it , but I have to agree with what Phil said in the clip too. I have a multitude of boosts on any pedalboard I setup. I have boost in EQ,Kalamazoo,TS9, DunlopCFH wah, Echophonic Jr,Xotic SP compressor and that is everything on the board but chorus,tuner,a/b and a G String. Will be adding an EP and maybe a BB or AC boost eventually and a second EQ in the loop. A Keeley Katana clean boost is a wonderful thing for volume if you use it properly.Never understood a ton of gain for rhythm guitar in the first place , it always good to have different textures with multiple guitars and /or keys. Heck I never want to play the same position chord someone else is playing too. Too much random babbling

Amp is maxed. What do you do? There's a few things one can do.

1) hit the clean boost; you will get louder

2) hit the eq which has been shaped to boost the mid range

3) a little trick us older farts do: use the guitar's volume knob; turn down for
rhythm, turn up for solos

Oh i agree 100% with no 3 ;)

I do that with my non master vol Bassman.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

I was thinkin EQ with mid boost too

Volume pedal where you set the minimum volume for your rhythm level is what I used to do.

Not that I ever max gain out... just that it wasn't convenient to walk over to the Marshall and turn the gain up playing live.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

I would have said put some type of clean boost in the effects loop to increase volume for solos and keep your gain maxed out! =D.

In all seriousiness the best solo boost I've used is a simple EQ pedal in the loop. An OD pedal is good in front of the amp if you don't want/need more volume and just want a bit more saturation and sizzle. As for maxing out gain, there is something to be said for backing off a bit. However, ss I've gotten older I'd like to tell you that I use less gain but the honest truth is I still play with a lot...and I LOVE it!

I don't have any amps with a "Gain" knob but the model T with both channels and the master volume on 10 (while sounding heavy as ****) still has plenty of room to be boosted. My Black Arts Coven kicks that thing so damn hard... It's like "Wow I sound amazing... WOW I sound amazinger... WOW THAT SOUNDS AWESOME TOO... CHRIST****ING BALLSBURGERS I'M DROWNING IN AN OCEAN OF FUZZY LAVA"

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

Gain on amp maxed out, no.
+8db vol. boost maxed out on MXR CAE wah for solos, hell yeah!
..that is all

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

I would be highly disposed to agree with you, but to answer the original question, I would probably switch pickups or fiddle with the tone knob. I usually restrict myself to my guitar's controls to utilize all its versatility.

Answer 2:

Go gangsta a la Kirk Hammett.

Meh, not really.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

So much depends on the amp. I never use full amp gain for rhythm, not even for leads. I agree with the clean boost or EQ mid bump method.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

For the most part, I agree. When gain is so high that you're having difficulty getting a volume increase without 'mush' an EQ pedal (or totally clean boost) in-the-loop will give the desired results. But I hate the multiple cable issue. Then again, I also dislike too much gain also.

Re: Do you guys agree with me on my statement about GAIN ?

I disagree. If someone tells you they are playing rhythm with their gain maxed out, then they obviously already know what they want their rhythm sound to be, and who are we to tell them to change their whole thing?

I think a simple e.q. pedal and/or maybe a clean boost, and a band that knows how to be dynamic are the answers.
